Description and Video of an Airlift Competition
Objective is to complete as many sorties as possible ferrying relief supplies across the river in 1 minute.

Rules:

Timing starts when glider first crosses the “river bank” from a condition of controlled flight by one of the pilots.

Timing ends at the first occurrence of any of the following:

- time reaches 1 minute

- either pilot enters the “river”

- aircraft lands or crashes

Scoring:

- 1 point per crossing within the 1-minute time period.

- Bonus (3 points) for using a scale Transport or Utility category aircraft  (Includes war-surplus military transports, bombers, patrol aircraft, etc. which were often turned into civil transport or utility aircraft after their military careers).

- To count, a crossing must begin and end with controlled flight (lesser of 5 seconds, or enough time to complete a turnaround).

- No restarts.  If you land, you’re done.  Score all crossings successfully completed.

Tips:  For the catch - stand to one side of the incoming glider’s path – NOT directly in front of it!  For the release – DO NOT stop the board suddenly.  This will send an air disturbance forward, which will overtake the glider!  You want to be able to receive it, turn it around while GAINING all the altitude necessary for the return trip, and release it smoothly in the general direction of your partner.  Although it is a timed event, remember the “3 C’s”: Calm, Cool, and Consistent.  Practice your climbing turns.  Club Racers, the Twin Otter, and the B-17 are all pretty good for this.
