Lesson Plans for X-Surfer Flight Instruction | ||||||
First flight: Purpose is to maintain the glider in sustained flight using the paddle. Instructor will launch glider for student. Student will attempt to maintain glider in sustained flight using paddle. Paddle should be kept vertical and steady under and slightly behind the glider in flight. The closer the paddle is to the glider, the more effect it will have sustaining the glider. Student and Instructor move together until flight speed is attained and instructor releases glider. Student sustains the glider by keeping the paddle slightly behind and below the glider. Second flight: Purpose is to turn the glider and return it to level flight. Instructor will launch glider for student. Student will attempt to turn the glider then return the glider to wings level flight using the paddle. To turn the glider the paddle is moved to the wing opposite the direction of turn. To return the glider to wings level flight, the paddle is moved under the low wing, then retruned to the center position when the wings are level. Moving the paddle too far out on a wing results in loss of altitude and overbanking. A coordinated turn results in minimal loss of altitude. Copyright Phil Rossoni, 8/4/2003 |

Competitions can be helpful to get people interested and hone their flying skills. A description of a walkalong glider competition can be found here. Back to Home Page |
