Description of a Short Haul Airlift Competition
Race 6: Tuesday, Feb 21

Pilot’s Briefing at 1135 Hrs in Walter Beech Hall.

The event will be Short-Haul Airlift, a team event.  You and your partner stand on opposite sides of a “no walk zone” (approx. 6 feet wide) and fly a glider back and forth to each other.  A successful pass must start and end in controlled flight by the appropriate pilot.  The team who completes the most passes within 1 minute wins.  3-point bonus for flying a utility or transport category aircraft (because the whole point is to ferry relief supplies to a location which has been isolated due to either natural or man-made military/political events).

The only penalty for a crash is the time it will take you to restart.  But, note that you must fly it enough to prove you’re in control before sending it across to your partner.  Therefore, an airborne turn WILL be more time-efficient than the infamous Brian Scharping catch-and-relaunch.

Make as many scoring attempts as you wish, with as many different partners as you wish.  For any given scoring attempt, the two partners will each receive the score obtained on that attempt.  Your final score will be the score from your best attempt.

Hint:

When you’re on the receiving end, stand still and wait for the glider to fly past you before attempting to establish control.  Any movements you make while the glider is approaching you, will adversely affect its flight path.
