Description of a
Slow Flying Competition
SLOW RACE:  Objective is to take AS LONG AS POSSIBLE to fly through a marked course with no unauthorized deviations (such as circles, turnarounds within the confines of the course, or generally any maneuver in which the aircraft or pilot move in a backward direction on the course).

If you fail to complete the course, you still receive a score equal to the amount of time you remained legally in flight on the course.

Timers: start the clock when the pilot and aircraft cross the starting line.  Stop the clock the first time any of the following occur:

-        Pilot and aircraft in flight cross the finish line

-        Aircraft crashes on or near the race course

-        Aircraft departs the race course beyond the pilot’s control  (do NOT wait for the aircraft to land in this situation, stop when the aircraft passes beyond the pilot’s reach)

-        Pilot departs the race course, or impacts the course boundaries with sufficient force to move them

-        Aircraft makes any unauthorized maneuver

The PILOT must stay within the course; minor excursions by the AIRCRAFT are permitted.  However, if the aircraft makes a major excursion from the course, timing shall stop when the timer determines that the aircraft has effectively traveled beyond the pilot’s control.

Site conditions permitting, the course will look something like the diagram below, and will be roped off so that pilots have clear and unmistakable visual indication where the course boundaries are.
