“Exodus”
Notes
This story began with a cool
visualization, which I won’t give away right now so as not to spoil the
story. I had to build the story around
that idea, and it grew and blossomed over time. I’m sure it would do so even more if I took my time, but I am
eager to release my idea, so I guess this will do. If I ever feel the need to go back and re-write it, I will.
I wanted to look into a bit of Trunks’s
complicated mind, how he’s so quiet and humble, so kind after all he’s been
through. This story could do so even
more than it does, but that takes time and concentration my tumultuous house
deprives me of. Which is why a
re-writing may indeed be in order. That
boy deserves recognition.
Since the story contains Elves, in a
sense, I figured I had to research their origin since all I knew about them was
they had pointy ears. I’ve found many
conflicting sources, though, so I’ll have to find a middle-ground and create a
few of my own theories as well. So I
hope I don’t get too much wrong, and also hope I don’t get a bunch of hate-mail
reprimanding me for mistakes. I just
don’t have the opportunity to watch or read stories about Elves, so I’m doing
the best I can with what I have.
Recently, in college, my wonderful
Composition professor had us study the principles of Joseph Campbell, a
cultural anthropologist. People who
work at Disney are required to read his findings. What this guy did, was find patterns tying movies to ancient
myths and even our real lives. I won’t
spoil it all for you; it’s fascinating to discover on your own. But for those who know a bit about him, the
names of my chapters are stages in “the Hero’s Journey”, as the story follows
those same patterns.
Does that make my story too predictable
and repetitious? Well, considering just
about ALL movies follow the exact same pattern yet we remain interested in them…
most likely not. ^_^ Our empathy with
the hero, due to our own lives emulating his journey, tends to keep us
interested thanks to even the smallest variations. It is, after all, as much the journey as it is the destination.
