The day of the hatching Karranatey entered the dunes and her eyes drifted to the spot where that egg had been. But the egg was not there and Karranatey scanned the dunes in dismay, seeing that Arimith had moved all the eggs around. She would not know which was hers until it hatched, if it hatched...

Karranatey held her left hand up in front of her, wishing she knew how to control the magic wrapped up in the talisman, wishing she could at least make the talisman glow so she could comfort herself that it was there. Ever since the white dragon’s rider, Phoebe, had burst into the girls’ room and startled them all with a call to get to the sands, Karranatey’s stomach had been in knots, her mind going a hundred directions at once. What if that egg didn’t hatch? What if the dragon inside had been merely curious about her magic and not truly meant for her at all? With these agonizing thoughts running through her mind did she watch the eggs as they began to hatch and find their new life partners.

The first to hatch was a cream who took a moment to right herself after her tumble out of the egg before moving gracefully toward the female candidates. She chose from among the girls and Karranatey heaved a frustrated sigh, wishing her talisman could at least reassure her that the hatchling for her was here. But she saw no light, nor felt any sort of twinge and she was forced to watch as a brown and a purple hatched and began bickering. The sire barked at them though and both ran toward the males, choosing their life partners rather quickly.

Then a red and a large blue broke through their shells, the red heading for the three remaining females and the blue choosing the one remaining male. Karranatey watched the red eagerly as the hatchling tried to make up her mind, but still her talisman gave her no indication that this hatchling was meant for her and the red soon bonded to one of the other two girls. That left only one egg on the sands, Karranatey and the other girl walking forward as Arimith lowered her head threateningly. They both stopped as a white hatchling tumbled from the shell and righted herself as she crooned in a lilting, bubbly tone.

Karranatey bit her lip in frustration as the white made no move toward either herself or the other candidate and Arimith remained threateningly in the way so neither of them could approach the hatchling. Phoebe seemed ready to scold the unruly mother but Arimith and Valonath seemed to be in cahoots over this one as he swung his gaze to her and she sat back down.

Seeing she was to get no help from the rider Karranatey felt tears of frustration well up in her eyes. She was about to admit defeat and storm out of the sands forever when she felt a twinge in her left palm and lifted her hand to find it glowing a gentle blue. The little white trilled in excitement then, standing and hurrying to where Karranatey stood, a dumbfounded grin spreading over her usually straight face. The white ignored the smile and nudged her left hand as the glow faded. Oh! Why did it stop glowing?

“I'm still learning how to make it glow, Valerieth,” said Karranatey with a nervous laugh.

Make it glow again! barked the white commandingly and Karranatey sighed in disappointment though nothing could wipe the grin from her face.

“I can’t right now,” she replied and placed the hand on Valerieth’s head as they walked off the hot sands. The talisman glimmered at the contact between Karranatey and the white hatchling and Valerieth shivered in delight before bounding ahead a few strides in her eagerness to be fed.

Karranatey just laughed and hurried to follow her, knowing this beautiful little spunky dragon would play a huge roll in her quest to learn and control her magic. Perhaps someday they would conquer it and return to her home to fulfill her destiny.
