Kirfon
Everything else was going rather well for him. He’d befriended one of the gold candidates; a young woman named Jralli. She was really nice and they spent a great deal of time together, but she in no way replaced Arinza in his thoughts and affections. That day was just like any other. He and Jralli were seated amongst the other candidates listening to a lesson on impression when Frelarnith’s rider came rushing out of the hatching sands yelling that the eggs were hatching early. Shocked it took Kirfon a moment to react but Jralli was on her feet in an instant and he soon followed her lead. All the candidates made a dash for the barracks where they all changed into their white robes. In the barracks Kirfon saw Darison, another candidate who he’d been rather friendly with putting on his own robe and flashed him a smile. Darison grinned in return and the two of them headed to the sands together. Once on the sands Kirfon’s tension mounted. He searched out Jralli and saw her standing with the three other gold candidates by the mound on which the gold egg stood. She seemed almost as nervous as he felt and she didn’t turn his way so he turned his attention to the violently rocking eggs before him. The first egg hatched to reveal a bronze and the dragonet walked up and down the row of male candidates before stopping in front of Kirfon and Darison. Kirfon smiled as the hatchling warbled at Darison and the man’s eyes grew wide as he smiled down at the bronze. “Oh Toshikoth I would have been here for you no matter when you hatched,” said Darison as he led the hatchling from the sands and Kirfon chuckled, momentarily forgetting his nervousness as he realized the hatchling had been worried no one would be there for him. ![]() I am Matsuoth and you are my rider now, said the brown and Kirfon grinned down at the hatchling, reaching out and rubbing his eye ridges affectionately. “I’m glad you chose me Matsuoth. Now let’s get off these sands, my feet are about to burn right off!” Kirfon said in reply, only now realizing how hot his feet really were. He and Matsuoth left the sands and he fed the hatchling until he was full. Matsuoth fell asleep and Kirfon moved to the entrance of the sands, hoping to see if Jralli impressed or not. He was just in time to see the gold hatchling choose someone else. He felt bad for Jralli and went back over to Matsuoth, comforted by the sleepy contented thoughts that drifted his way from the hatchling. He gently stroked the brown’s head and eye ridges and waited for Jralli to come see him. His thoughts strayed to Arinza as they always did and he smiled softly, knowing his brown would be good enough for her black. He just hoped he could convince her that he was worth having... |
