Ligria and Matria

About a month later Ligria was again in the courtyard standing in a line up with most of the young people of the hold. This time Fire Ridge Weyr was conducting a Search. She sighed and watched the ground as she always did and saw a pair of boots walk past. But then the boots stopped and came back. Ligria looked wide-eyed up into the smiling face of a dragonrider.

“Hi, what’s your name?” she asked and Ligria’s mouth fell open.

“L-Ligria, ma’am,” she managed to stammer out.

“Oh, don’t you dare call me ma’am. My name’s Amber and that’s my green, Tacomenth,” the rider turned to point to the green dragon sitting casually in the center of the courtyard. “I don’t suppose you’d be interested in coming with us to Fire Ridge, Ligria?”

Ligria’s mouth fell open yet again and she just stood there, wide-eyed and slack jawed for quite some time before she managed to close her mouth and jump out of line.

“I’ll be right back, I swear!” she called as she rushed back into the hold.

Ligria had a vague idea of where he friend would be as she had seen her in her room earlier so she raced up to Matria’s room and flung open the door without knocking. Her friend was no where to be seen but that didn’t deter her one bit. She started throwing open the closet doors and checking behind the curtains and finally dropped to her knees and looked under the bed. Sure enough there was Matria looking quite startled to find her friend in her room.

“Matria!” cried Ligria grabbing her friends arm and dragging her out from under the bed. “Get out of there and come with me!”

“Ligria, no! I don’t want to be Searched, I’ve told you,” said Matria trying to pull away from her friend. But Ligria was determined and before long the two of them were stumbling out into the courtyard where a very confused looking dragonrider was talking to Ligria’s parents.

“Amber!” cried Ligria running up, dragging Matria behind her. “I won’t go unless you take my friend Matria too. She’d be a perfect dragonrider...”

Ligria stopped and everyone turned to look at Tacomenth who had started crooning at Matria. Amber turned back to look at Matria with a smile and a question in her eyes.

“I’ll go,” said Matria with a smile and a shrug. “The only reason I was hiding is because I didn’t want to go without my best friend!”

Amber smiled and finished up her discussion with Ligria’s parents and then the girls clambered up onto Tacomenth’s back and they were on their way to Fire Ridge Weyr!
