Naysi
"Candidates to the sands!" said whoever was standing in the doorway. "The eggs are hatching. Get your robes on girls!" And then the figure and the light were gone. Naysi jumped out of her bed and quickly threw on her white robe. The other girls got up more slowly and she waited so she wouldn't be the first to the sands. It turned out that the first group of candidates arrived even before the Weyrwoman, but before long everyone was assembled and the humming of the dragons became deafening as the eggs rocked violently. Naysi stood in the cluster of girls, her face unreadable, but her emotions boiling below the surface where no one could see them. Would a hatchling look her way? She didn't expect much, just a green would be fine, but part of her wondered if any of the hatchlings would even look her way. Dragons shared emotion with their rider and Naysi feared that she would be unable to share her feelings with anyone. It wasn't that she chose to hide the emotions, it just came naturally, and she hadn't any idea how to let them out. Naysi tore herself away from such thoughts as the first dragon broke free from his shell. The brown sat for a moment and only after receiving a nudge of encouragement from his mother did he choose from among the boys. The next was a blue who made his choice quickly and then a green and another brown broke their shells. The green stopped in front of Naysi and looked her up and down. A smile started to spread across Naysi's face, to be followed closely by a tear as the hatchling moved on to choose someone else. She'd been right, no dragon would want her. She stopped paying attention then and let herself be pushed to the back of the group. Many eggs hatched, but Naysi did not notice what colors. Her facial expression calm as ever she wallowed in her misery behind the rest of the candidates. Perhaps she was broadcasting her emotions more than she thought though for after quite some time she felt a gentle brush against her mind. She looked up in astonishment but could see nothing for the remaining girls were standing between her and the eggs. She tried to peer past them but could not and then she heard a most wonderful sound and a riot of emotions melded with hers. Naysi, where are you? Are you here? ![]() Oh, good. Now take me out of here, I am so hungry! "Of course Halurath," said Naysi with a genuinely happy smile. But before she left the sands she scooped up a few of Halurath's pastel colored egg shells and smiled down at the rainbow hatchling as they walked from the sands. "I want to have a souvenir of this glorious day." |
