Nalira and Malta

Nalira and Malta woke up early. Their dragons, now officially in the weyrling stage, were still asleep. The two friends always got up before the two squabling dragons if they could manage it. Nalira would spend the time primping and making herself presentable and Malta would keep a watchful eye on the two weyrlings.

This day was much like any other. Nalira was staring into the glass praticing delighted expressions, afterall, today would be their first flying lesson and she wanted to look her best when she finally experienced the thrill of flying. Meanwhile Malta stood at the entrance to the weyr, watching the dragons closely. She could tell that Szarath was close to waking up and she wanted to be there to mediate if the tiny green decided to snap at Ezarath.

As she stood there, Malta yawned and ran her fingers through her hair. She hadn't even brushed it yet and it was still quite mussed from that night. She'd thrown on her breeches and a tunic as she'd rolled out of bed and now realized Nalira would soon be scolding her for not at least trying to look decent. Just then Szarath awoke and as usual sat up wide awake and lunged at Ezarath who was still dozing contentedly.

"Szarath!" snapped Malta in a commanding tone and the dragon stopped her lunge to croon questioningly at her soon-to-be rider. "Don't even think about it!"

I wasn't going to hurt her! exclaimed Szarath in surprise. No matter how many times Malta had been waiting for her and stopped her, the dragon was always surprised to find her rider ready for her every move. I was just going to wake her up, I swear!

"You know I never buy your story, dear, why do you keep trying? Don't you think I know what goes on in your head?" said Malta with a sigh, wishing her dragon would learn to get along with her twin sister.

I'm sorry. I do try, but she doesn't want to get along with me! At that exact moment Ezarath opened an eye and craned her neck out to snap her jaws at Szarath's leg. Szarath jumped back and growled, a rumbling sound from deep in her throat. You see! She doesn't want us to get along either!

Malta just sighed and walked over to rub Szarath's small head. Nalira emerged then and walked over to do the same to Ezarath who immediately started crooning and crying like a hatchling.

Ooo...did you see her, Nalira? She tried to hurt me. She thought I was still asleep and she tried to attack me. Why does she always do that? I think I should get to eat first today because of that, don't you? I deserve that much, don't I?

"Of course you do, Ezarath. We'll let you eat first today. Now why don't we head down to the feeding grounds right now. Malta still needs to brush her hair so you'll get to eat first," said Nalira, flashing a glare at Malta and Szarath. Malta's mouth had fallen open at what Nalira said and she could only imagine what Ezarath had said to her friend.

"Nalira, we're not supposed to let them eat until after our lesson today. A full dragon has a hard time getting off the ground," was all she said though and she frowned as Nalira sneered at her.

"Oh, that's right you're the knowledgable one. I'm just the pretty one who at least has enough sense to brush my hair in the morning," said Nalira, then turned her back on Malta and faced her dragon. "Come on Ezarath, at least we can be the first in the bowl for our lesson."

"Nalira!" said Malta in shock, giving Szarath a warning look as the weyrling started growling again, having picked up on her rider's emotions.

Nalira didn't look back though, simply walking from the room, Ezarath flying to the bowl to meet her. Malta frowned and returned to stroking Szarath's head, leaning her own against it. The dragon crooned questioningly and Malta sighed and looked up at her dragon. I will try to be nicer to her.

Malta smiled and laid her head against Szarath's again. "Thank you, dearheart. But I think Nalira and I need to ask for seperate quarters after our lesson today. It's time we saw a little less of each other."

Oh good then! said Szarath happily, shaking her head so Malta was forced to lift hers and see the excited swirls of green and blue in her dragon's eyes. We will be so much better off without them! We'll have much more fun. Maybe you'll even have time to brush your hair in the morning since you won't have to keep an eye on Ezarath to keep her from hurting me!

Malta tried not to laugh, but she couldn't help it. She smiled at Szarath and nodded her head. "Something like that. Now let's get down to the bowl for our first flying lesson!"
