Keeping items together like clothes, food, personal items, etc. means less searching around in your pack, especially in the dark.  Total carried weight should not exceed more than 20% of body weight. 

General gear checklist

Camp:
Backpack
Walking stick or hiking poles
Sleeping bag
Bed roll (optional)
Tent and tent pegs

Water: (Carry at least 2 liters a day)
Water Filter
Water Bottles
Iodine tablets

Food:
Food bag
Stove
Pot
Windscreen/Stand for pot
Can opener
Spoon
Spices

Clothing: (depends on weather - wool or fleece is best)
Clothes bag
Warm hat
Shirt (Orange is good during hunting season)
Fleece sweatshirt
Long underwear (Tops/Bottoms)
Shorts
Long Shell Pants (Water resistant)
2 pairs wool or other (non-cotton) socks
Boots or sneakers depending on terrain
Rain poncho

Personals:
Pen/Notebook paper
Toothbrush/Paste
2 small lighters
Toilet paper in ziplock bag
Foot powder
Vitamins, Asperin, and/or Medications
Chapstick
Sunscreen

Driver's License

Maps/Guidebooks/Compass

Duct Tape (A few feet's worth, wrap around water bottles)
Plastic Bags (for sleeping bag - rain, boots at night, ID, trash, food, etc.)
