...ceramic art...
"ode to michaelangelo" 1997
i handbuilt this with clay during my senior year ceramic art class.  the assignment was to pick a famous artist and create a "chair" of some sort.

i sketched michaelangelo's drawing on a piece of oak tag and then carved it into small clay slabs.  the carvings in the back of the front slab is of paintbrushes side by side with hands grabbing them as if it were bars of a jail cell.

michaelangelo was a genius with heaven-sent talent, though his talent was also his burden.  his life is a sad story.

i'm not sure what firing technique i used.
"holy cheese" 2001

the assignment in my college ceramics class was to handbuild a vessel with six holes and two handles.

thus,

this... umm... thing was born.

now if this isn't art, i don't know what is. ;)
"hand jug" 1997
this was also made in my high school ceramics class.  the jug was built out of slabs of clay that was laid onto a container for shaping.  the stamped hand was made by a previously handbuilt clay stamp that i used to indent into the front of the jug.  obviously, i didn't do a very good job at glazing it.
"good luck cat" 1997

this was handbuilt using the traditional chinese "good fortune" cat in mind.
"egyptian cat" 2001

i decided to revisit the "cat theme" with an egyptian twist.  but after a very nasty glazing, the cat seemed to take a sort of morbid and grotesque looking form.  it looked much better before the glaze in its bisque ware stage, complete with egyptian eyes and cloak with symbol.   unfortunately, i didn't stop there.  i took a risk at glazing it and it didn't come out the way i planned.
