| Chapter 1: Psychology as a science. Efficient studying: Read the book before coming to class. Read small sections at a time and take breaks in-between. Relate new information to what you already know; find examples that apply to you. During the lecture, do not write down everything I say. Pay attention and write down key concepts. Psychology is not all common sense!! Critical thinking is important: Do not take the obvious for granted. Introspection is not adequate for understanding complex issues. Confirmation bias: we tend to only consider evidence we agree with and disregard evidence we do not agree with. Availability heuristic: we tend to think that the first thing that comes to mind is true or more common. |
