| Chapter 2: Biological bases of behavior How neurons work: At rest, the electric polarity is negative inside the neuron. Stimulation from another neuron forms a graded potential on the dendrites. If this stimulation reaches a certain threshold, an all-or-none action potential propagates itself along the axon. At the synapse, neurotransmitters are released and bind themselves to receptors on the next neuron. The spinal cord is composed of two pathways: The afferent pathway conveys information from the body to the brain. The efferent pathway conveys information from the brain to the body. The spinal cord is also responsible for reflexes. |
