Chapter 11

Belief sampling model:
Topic retrieves related memories; influenced by memory biases
All external stimulations and retrieved memories may serve as retrieval cues and provide context for judgments

In surveys, the order of questions matters because people want to appear consistent in their answers
The order of the alternatives matters: recency effect
Responses are especially plastic when people don't know much about an issue
   These people often give pseudo-opinions
Giving a "don't know" or "no opinion" choice may eliminate the uneducated people from the sample but it keeps the ratio of other options unchanged
Choices with "middle category" may attract pseudo-opinions
Choices without a middle category are good at assessing general inclinations
