Chapter 6

Attachment: strong emotional
   Drive theory: attachment because parent provides what children need
   Ethological theory: attachment to what promotes survival
      Synchrony in humans: quality of interaction

      Preattachment (0-6 weeks): proximity-promoting behaviors; no real attachment
      Attachment in the making (6 weeks-8 months): start narrowing interests to fewer people
      Attachment (8-24 months): use parent as secure base; separation/stranger anxiety
      Reciprocal relationship: use negotiations and requests

      Build internal working model for future

   Strange situation to determine child's attachment style
      Secure attachment: parent used as secure base; actively seeks contact at return
      Avoidant attachment: unresponsive; not distressed when parent leaves; slow to greet at return
      Ambivalent attachment: seek closeness; angry at return
      Disorganized-disoriented attachment: confused, contradictory behaviors

   Due to quality of caregiving:
      Responsive, synchrony => secure
      Unresponsive, intrusive, overstimulating => avoidant
      Inconsistent => ambivalent
      Abuse/Trauma => disorganized-disoriented

      Family circumstances: stress and instability are bad
                                       internal working model of parent leads to same kind of relationship with kid

     Infant characteristic: temperament: easy children tend to be more securely attached
