Chapter 11

Formal operational stage: think logically about abstract concepts
Hypothetico-deductive reasoning: general theory => hypotheses => systematic test
Propositional thought: can evaluate logic of propositions irrespective of content

Piaget was overly optimistic for this stage: reach abstract thinking only with extensive experience

Gains in perspective taking
Imaginary audience: think are the focus of everyone's attention => self-conscious
Personal fable: inflated opinion of importance/invulnerability => risk taking

Gains in metacognition
Can consider more than 2 variables.
Can make better arguments => challenge cultural/familial values, beliefs, and practices
Cognitive self-regulation: plan, monitor progress, and redirect unsuccessful actions
