Erikson: identity versus identity confusion
   Due to identity crisis in complex societies: period of stress and confusion as experiment with alternative values and goals

Marcia's theory of identity achievement
   Crisis: old values and choices are reexamined
   Commitment: adherence to particular roles and ideology

   Identity achievement: been through crisis and reached commitment to self-chosen roles
   Moratorium: crisis in progress, no commitment yet (especially in early years of college)
   Foreclosure: commitment to parental/cultural roles without crisis
   Identity diffusion: not commited, haven't gone through crisis

Exploration: identity develops throughout the lifespan, where choices are put together into an organized self-structure
