Chapter 5

Information processing view:

3-store model of memory and mental strategies

Sensory memory: perception of sensory information

Working memory: has limited capacity; increases with age
Automatic attention responsible for attraction to novelty; declines with age
Controlled attention responsible for concentration; increases with age

Long-term memory: helps us make inferences about the world around us; storage of strategies

Infantile amnesia: inability to recall information before 3-4 years of age
Due to lack of self-concept and autobiographical memory
Due to lack of verbally-based memory
Due to use of implicit memory rather than explicit memory
