Chapter 14

Sternberg's triangular theory of love
   Intimacy: feelings that promote closeness and connectedness => liking
   Passion: feelings that promote intense longing for union, including sex => infatuation
   Commitment => empty love

   All three is consummate love
   In Western society, relationships often start as romantic love (intimacy + passion) and move to companionate love (intimacy + commitment)
   In other societies, emphasis is on companionate love rather than romantic love

Role of attachment: internal working model affects person's expectation about partner and relationship
   Secure attachment => trust, happiness, friendship
   Avoidant attachment => mistrust of partner, anxiety when people get close
   Resistant attachment => emotional highs and lows, jealousy

   Internal model can be altered but it may require extensive work/experience

Myths about marriage
   It's a perpetual bliss
   Quality of sex life is the best predictor of satisfaction
