Automatization of skills due to practice:
   Frees attentional resources for learning other things
   Better to automatize strategies than facts

Development of frontal lobe:
   Gains in cognitive inhibition: can control actions better
   More controlled use of attention: concentrate better, more planful
   Increased metacognition
      Better used of memory strategies: rehearsal, elaboration, organization, chunking

Language development:
   Increased vocaulary by 5,000 to 10,000 words a year depending on exposure
   Grammar: create unambiguous sentences, better use of verbs
   Pragmatics: speak politely and persuasively

   Challenge to non-native speakers
      Bilingual education: given in two languages; not financially feasible for lots of schools
      English as a second language: learn english part of the day, taught in english otherwise
      Better than total submersion
      Better if parents learn english as well
      Kids at no greater risks of failing than US kids but must be tested with language they are most confortable with not to be classified as mentally slow or learning disabled
