Chapter 4

In first year, babies grow 10-12 inches and triple in weight
Reach half their size at 2 (girls) and 2.5 (boys)
Girls are more physically mature than boys.

Cephalocaudal trend: head most developed; rest of body catches up later.
Proximodistal trend: growth from center of body outward

At brain level:
   Born with most/all neurons
Increased growth of neuronal fibers and synapses
Pruning based on stimulation; myelinization to increase speed and insulation

   Sensitive periods for biological processes
No sensitive period for culturally-specific knowledge and skills

In western society we tend to think that caring for kids every time they cry will spoil them and make them less independent
In other societies providing constant care leads to less crying, greater attachment, and more independence
Don't be overprotective as it decreases kid's independence
