Chapter 5

Piaget's theory of cognitive development: kids are active learner, stage theory
   Kids born with motor schemes
   Modes of adaptation:
Assimilation: use current schemes to interpret the world; state of cognitive equilibrium
Accommodation: create new or modify existing schemes; state of cognitive disequilibrium
Organization: create interconnected schemes with experience

   Sensory motor stage (0-2 years):
Children "think" in terms of perception and motor actions
      Tied to immediate present
      Circular reactions: repeat interesting experiences

Substage 1 (0-1 month): based on reflexes
Substage 2 (1-4 months): primary circular reactions
Voluntary actions centered on body by repetition of experiences
         Anticipate events
         Early coordination between schemes
