Chapter 5

Piaget's theory of cognitive development (continued):
Substage 3 (4-8 months): secondary circular reactions
      Make interesting events last
      Imitate practiced behaviors

Substage 4 (8-12 months): understanding of causal relations
      Explore world intentionally
      Attain object permanence
Failure to detect it earlier may come from inability to search only: can be shown at 3.5 months with habituation-dishabituation paradigm
Kids generally acquire skills long before they have the motor coordination to do things on their own
Still show AB search error: due to problems inhibiting previously rewarded answer

Substage 5 (12-18 months): tertiary circular reactions
      Experimental and creative approach
      Pass AB search tasks

Substage 6 (18-24 months): mental representation of the world
Solve problems mentally rather than through trial and error
Look for objects moved out of sight
      Make-believe play
      Differed imitation
