Chapter 8

Morality
   First externally controlled by parents
   Gradually regulated by inner standards

Punishment
Threats, physical force, and withdrawal of love lead to little guilt and lots of self-blame and anxiety, which impairs learning
Does not promote lasting changes, prevents learning good behaviors, models aggression, reinforces parent for using punishment, and has to happen immediatly to be effective

Induction: point out effects of misbehavior on others
   Promotes prosocial behavior
   Internalize moral rules

Time out and withdrawal of priviledges can be very effective
Be consistent, have a warm relationship with kid, explain, praise success, tell kids how to behave ahead of time.

   Goodness of fit:
For inhibited children patient tactics work better
For active children secure attachment is the best predictor of the effectiveness of punishment
