Chapter 6

Erikson's psychosocial theory of development: each stage characterized by inner conflict
Trust vs mistrust (0-1 year): warm, responsive care leads to feeling confident that the world is a good place
Autonomy vs shame and doubt (1-3 years): giving kids reasonable choices makes them more independent

Temperament: stable individual differences based on genes
   Activity level
   Approach/avoidance regarding new experiences
   Negative emotionality
   Task persistence

Can be moderated by environment although usually falls back on temperament in stressful situations
