Chapter 7: Semantic Memory Modular view of the brain: each part of the brain is specialized in processing a certain kind of information. Modules are said to be entirely independent from each other But modules evolved in the context of others => neurological evidence of sharing of information between modules. Tasks used in the modular view are generally too easy for the modules to draw resources from other systems. There seem to be some general processes that are at play throughout the brain. Concept formation: how information becomes organized in LTM. Artificial/logical concepts: based on specific rules. Natural concepts: based on previous experiences => fuzzy boundaries between categories. Prototype formation: brain abstracts individual features and averages them out. Basis for semantic memories: related episodes are abstracted into a generalized concept. Allow for the recognition of objects. Can lead to false memories. |
