Luck in Dueling

Back

Luck, along with Deck Building and Psychology, makes up the trio of what makes a good duelist.

Luck's one of the most debateable topics in DMO; many decks rely on it, and do quite well. There's a saying; You make your own luck. I'm here to prove the point.

Now, before you go on a ranting email about how you can't change luck, please read the article:P

Bad luck is what most newbies call when they don't draw the topdeck they need, or when the opponent gets a hand to counter exactly what you're doing. The thing many new players don't immediatly relise is they're making their own luck. By stuffing their deck up to 50, they're reducing their chances of getting the cards they need. I've never made a deck with more than 43 cards for god knows how long; most are at 40. This DRASTICAlLY improves the chances of me drawing those restricted staple and the counters I need

Think about it... you have all but 1 card to make the perfect combo to win! Your deck has 70 cards. Considering you're halfway through the duel, you've got 55 cards left in your deck, right? In 3 turns you've got less than a 1/10 chance of getting that card. With a 40 card deck, halfway through the duel, you've got more than DOUBLE the chances of getting that card and ultimately winning the duel.

Remember not to oversaturate your deck. That Ceasefire or that Rush Recklessly might not suit the style of your deck. A general idea is to make sure almost all of your cards will be a dead draw only 1/10 times. This will give you better starting hands and betting dueling overall.

For example, I have a particular shadow deck in which every card is useful in almsot all situations. It focuses on field control and bringing out Patricians of Darknesses, Vampire Lords, Jinzos and Airknights. I can easily stuff tribute into the deck due to it's omnipresent monster control.

Take these steps to increase your general luck:
1. Cut your deck down to 40. Look through the deck, and, for example, if you have 45 cards, find the 5 cards that have the least amount of situations they are useful in. Remove them.

2. Look through every non-staple in your deck. Is there any card out there that does the job better, or even the same job with different stats?

3. Balance your Monster/Spell/Trap count. About 40% 4 star or less monsters is ideal for most decks, with no more than 4/5 tribute monsters. Make sure you have 4-8 traps.

And finally, remember. Very rarely will bad luck be the cause of a loss.
