Episode 15: Oh no! Lina's Wedding Rhapsody! |
The first thing that's seen are Lina and Gourry's disbelieving, frustrated faces. Lina sweatdrops, and then clutches her head. "Oh, I've had it!" she yells indignantly. For coming to face them are yet another group of "heroes". "Lina, you villain!" shouts the leader. "Allow us, the three heroes of Gondor, to defeat you!" Lina mutters a "no", and Amelia tries vainly to convince their opponents that they're on the side of justice. No good. "Silence!" the leader shouts, his eyes blazing with anger. "Lina Inverse, fugitive from justice!" He puts on sunglasses, and his spiked silver hair looks menacing as he gives them all the finger. "I, Iyev, dark terror of my village, shall take your head!" With that said, he dramatically waves his arms blindingly fast while jumping towards the Slayers. "Now, taste my deadly Jet Wave!" The other two heroes also jump into the air in an assault towards Lina. With a bored sigh, Lina mutters, "Yeah, whatever. Fireball," as she raises up her hand. The blast shoots from her hand, causing a tremendous explosion which renders the "three heroes of Gondor" utterly defeated. They sprawl on the ground, dazed, cringing, and burnt to a crisp. "If I was serious, you'd all be dead by now," Lina said. "But I thought I'd hold back, and just teach you a lesson." "Sure doesn't look like it," Gourry commented. Suddenly, Lina sees a white flag put up from the ground. Holding the flag up and sweatdropping is a young man that looks to be in some sort of trouble. "Um, E-excuse me..." he manages. Lina, supposing that the guy is another hero, warns him not to get in their way. "N-no!" he shouted, springing forward and grasping Amelia's hands. "You see, I was watching before from behind a tree. I wanted to ask you to use your skills for me!" For some reason, this plea caused Amelia and Lina to become thoroughly disgusted. Both had small sweatdrops on their faces, and their faces had turned blue. Their eyes and mouth were twisted in gestures of disgust as well. After they both shook violently, Amelia let out a desperate scream, punching the guy square in the face, and sending him sprawling to the ground. "I hate this person!" she yelled. Gourry had no idea what was happening, and for good reason for once. "What's wrong, Amelia?" he asked. "It's not like he looks like a troll or anything." He bent down over the man, peering at him. The guy managed to lift his upper body up, sitting on the ground. "What d'you mean, a troll?" he asked. Amelia and Lina, strangely, were cringing back with horror. They clutched each other, waving their feet in the air as they tried to balance on foot to keep away from the guy. "Stay away from us! Shoo! Go away!" they shouted in unison. Gourry looked back in confusion. "Do you guys normally hate people this much?!" he asked, as the man had a flow of tears running down his face. Lina continued to cringe with expressions of pain, and then tried looking at the guy again. His eyes were exaggeratedly wavery, and the tears flowed down all the more. After she peered even closer, she quickly staggered back, whispering something in Amelia's ear. "I hate to do it?!" Amelia yelled in agony, her eyes brimming with tears. She cautiously leaned her body weight in the man's direction, and extended her arm fully so she wouldn't have to get near him. "O power of light and earth and wind," she began. "Break now this evil spell. Flow break." Instantly, the man started to shimmer, and then black clouds of supposed evil lifted themselves from him. He didn't understand what had happened. Amelia sighed from the effort, and Lina informed him, "You had a spell on you to repel girls. A REALLY powerful one." This information appeared to have an instant effect on the young man. "S-she put a spell on me?" he muttered to himself. Lina commented that it seemed he was in some type of trouble, and he admitted that he was. "My name is Hallas RyZu," he introduced himself. He explained his predicament in detail. He was the only son of a very rich nearby family, and a sorceress wanted to take over his house for some reason, by the name of Cally. The sorceress had apparently tried to force him to marry her daughter. "Cally!" Lina started. Gourry glanced at her. "What, you know this 'Cally' person?" he asked. Lina nodded. She explained that Cally was a nasty sorceress who married her daughters off to rich boys, and then "takes them for everything they have". "Looks like you've got a real winner after you," Gourry commented blandly. Still, Lina said she'd heard that all of Cally's nine daughters had already been married off, which left no one else to "scam" people with. "There's a tenth daughter," Hallas stated. "You've got to be kidding!" Lina replied. Hallas continued with his story. Cally had used her magic to get herself into his home, and then had further persuaded him in an effort to get him to marry her daughter. "And then what happened?" Amelia promted. "I refused to do it, of course!" Hallas replied. Then, he came to the vital part of his story: the deal. Cally had offered that if he managed to find another girl to marry him within one week, then she would leave his home, and no marriage would be forced upon him any longer. However, if he could not, he would have to marry Cally's tenth daughter no matter what. This was the point, Lina realized, that the girl repellent spell had been put on Hallas: a brilliant conspiracy. Cally had cheated. "I had no idea she'd done it," Hallas said bleakly. "I've been desperately wandering from town to town, looking for someone who'd marry me." "Ane it was impossible, right?" Amelia put in, sympathetically. Hallas continued: "But today at last... I've found someone!" Amelia and Lina looked at Hallas cautiously, asking who. "It's... It's..." shouted Hallas getting to his feet dramatically as bright colors swirled around him, and then suddenly stopped. "Miss Lina, it's you!" he said. CRUSH. Hallas sprawled on the ground under Lina's hand, and then got awkwardly to his knees, his face red and awkward. He explained sheepishly that since Lina was the one who had saw through Cally's evil and saved him that she was "the only girl I can ask!" Lina was taken aback by this, though not angry, more annoyed. "I'm only 15 years old! There's no way I'd be stupid enough to get married!" she protested. Hallas reassured her that it wouldn't be a real marriage, but rather just one for show. "Just to get Cally and her daughter out of my home," he explained, and Amelia silently nodded her approval in the background. Suddenly, she leaped up in between Lina's cringing face, and Hallas's smiling one. "Let's go, Miss Lina!" she said enthusiastically. "For the sake of justice, you can get married once or twice." "Why don't you do it?" Lina asked Amelia. Hallas, however, wouldn't be dissauded, and then offered a carriage that would carry them all the way to Sairaag if Lina accepted. "I wouldn't mind that!" Gourry said. "We wouldn't have to worry about any more crazy 'heroes'." Lina still protested violently, saying that marriage is still marriage, although this one would be fake. "An innocent girl like me can't just do that like it's nothing." Hallas popped up to his feet again. "How about for a thousand gold pieces?" he asked. Sproing! An odd springing sound as Lina's left ear reddened a little as seen from behind obviously signalled a nerve he'd touched on. "No, I'm-" Lina started. "All right, two thousand!" Hallas offered, holding up two fingers. Sproing! Another sound. "T-two thousand..." began Lina. "I'll even go as high as five thousand!" Hallas declared, grinning widely. Sproing! Lina looked back with a completely different expression. "Oh, what the heck?! It's only one time!" she said, also grinning. "Thank you so much!" Hallas shouted joyfully, along with Amelia. Meanwhile, Gourry muttered something about a "master businesswoman" in the foreground. Elsewhere, a cloaked man with a hat walked through the grass in the dark. Zangulus. Soon, he came upon the group of three bandits, still burnt upon the ground. After he asked what happened, he learnt that Lina had been through. Once he knew this, he asked which direction the sorceress had went, and discovered that a post town was also nearby in that direction. Knowing that, the swordsman continued on his silent way. Through a small mountain pass, a town is seen, at the end of which is a huge mansion, presumably Hallas's. However, inside is not Hallas, but an old woman and her daughter. They clinked their glasses together, and then drank a bit. "Mother, is Hallas coming back?" the young woman asked. "He definitely can't leave his fortune behind," Cally replied confidently; she was also positive that the aforementioned would return all alone. "I'm home!" Hallas announced, opening the door to the huge room a bit. Cally regarded him with a confident manner, casually asking if he was able to find someone to marry, though it was impossible to have done so. Hallas half-smiled, opening the doors wide and gesturing with his hand, causing Cally to look on with worried interest. Three more figures stepped through the doorway: Lina, with a veil over her head and in a dress, Gourry, complete with extra fake beard, and Amelia, dressed as a maid. "Im-Impossible!" Cally blurted, but Hallas took no heed. "This is my fiancee, Mina," Hallas announced, using Lina's presumed alternate identity. He then asked her to say hello. To everyone's surprise, Lina enthusiastically replied, "Hi everyone, I'm Mina! I'm like so totally happy to have met Hallas!" There was an awkward silence which followed, at which point Hallas leaned close to Lina's ear, asking her what she was doing in a worried manner. They exchanged a brief conversation, with Lina agreeing to play the part "straight". "Mother!" Cally's daughter complained. However, Cally's mind was on other things - she knew full well that her spell had been broken, and she wanted to find out why. Walking close up to Lina, she asked, "How do you do?" nonchalantly. Suddenly, a bright pink ray of energy shot toward Lina's head from Cally's own, though it couldn't be seen by the naked eye. Perhaps the opposing sorceress was trying to test for something. Lina grimaced from the force of the energy, and then, with a determined glare of her eyes, broke the spell. Cally glared at Lina, knowing that she was also a sorceress. Lina, in turn, thought that Cally was pretty powerful as well. Turning her attention elsewhere, Cally asked, "And who are they?", glancing in Amelia and Gourry's direction. Amelia introduced herself as Mary, Mina's handmaiden. Gourry, in turn, said, "And I am her butler, G-", and was suddenly overwhelmed by the urge to sneeze. As he did so, the fake mustache flapped awkwardly in the air, and then it hung like a dead rat from its position. Cally managed a surprised expression, at which point Gourry panicked, and quickly put the mustache back in place, introducing himself as Gagarin, Mina's butler. The evil sorceress wondered at the face of Gourry when he had sneezed, and then made the connection. The reward for the bounty would be her's! Hallas, of course, was totally unware of this, and he proudly declared that the wedding ceremony would be tomorrow morning in that very estate. "Now keep your promise and leave!" Hallas shouted, at which point Cally oddly agreed. Flashing a powerful glare in Lina's direction, she and her daughter then went out the door silently. Everyone agreed that the performance had been a success, and that all that was left was the wedding tomorrow - as long as that was pulled off, Cally would have to leave. "That look Cally gave me.. She's not going to take this lying down," Lina knew. "Are you sure this is going to work?" Cally's daughter asked, as the two stood in another section of the mansion. "Don't worry; tomorrow is going to be fun," Cally reassured her, smiling. The next day, the sun shone gloriously outside, and inside the mansion, "Mary" and "Gagarin" continued to play their accepted roles, while Hallas was now dressed in a stylistic white groom's fashion. They appeared to be waiting for something, standing in front of double closed doors. The doors suddenly opened, and all three were surprised, their faces turned to expressions of joy. Lina, dressed in a beautiful white bride's gown, held flowers as she was illuminated in the bright white light that announced her arrival. "Miss Lina, you're so pretty!" Amelia complimented her. "Oh, come on..." Lina said, blushing. Then, she abruptly stopped doing so as she saw what Gourry was doing: looking up her dress. "Can this really be Lina?" he asked, earning himself a royal kick that sent him sprawling. "Miss Lina, let's really get married!" Hallas cried, advancing on Lina with an odd expression. This, in turn, earned him a square punch in the head. By now, Lina was quite annoyed. Outside, Cally had employed a group of bandits; the Slayers' plan had already been exposed to her. "Your targets are Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev. Capture them and you'll all get a huge bounty," she ordered. The lead bandit asked what they should do, and Cally explained that their targets were in disguise. She would give them the signal when it was time to attack and capture. "Gotcha," the bandits replied. Cally smiled evilly and triumphantly. "I'll show you what happens when you mess with Cally the Sorceress!" she thought to herself. In the next seen, the enormous room used for marriages was shown inside the mansion, with all of the audience and the minister already in place. Cally and her daughter were already sitting in the audience, with the sorceress grinning confidently to herself. In the back of the room, Amelia and Gourry opened the double doors, revealing Hallas and Lina ready to play the roles of bride and groom. As they walked down the aisle hand in hand, the audience all looked joyfully at them, with no one suspecting a thing. All of a sudden, Lina tripped, and Hallas stopped to catch her before she fell to the ground. As she looked up to Hallas in surprise, the young man made the mistake of giggling nervously like a fool. Lina took this as a sign of perversion, at which point she let out a shriek, and punched Hallas, sending him flying back down the aisle. He landed flat on his face, and Lina still had her fists clenched. Cally laughed to herself, as did her daughter. Hallas sort of knelt in front of Lina, pleading, "Please take this seriously!" Lina grabbed him by his collar and replied harshly, "Just remember we're pretending, ok? Pretending!" Hallas, wisely, hastily replied that he would. A wedding bell rang on top of the building, and the group of bandits still stood at attention outside. The lead bandit raised his sword high. "Got it? When Miss Cally gives the word, we rush in!" "Right!" agreed the others. The bandits turned abruptly as they felt the presence of another man nearby: Zangulus. The swordsman coolly asked what "all the excitement" was about. "We're here to collect a bounty," replied the lead bandit. Zangulus reached out in a flash, and grabbed the bandit by the scruff of the neck. "A bounty? On who?!" he asked the terrified leader. Suddenly, a gust of wind catches Zangulus's attention. Looking up, he sees... Vrumugun, completely unharmed, and emotionless as ever. Zangulus regards this with a cocky, confident expression. "So, the phoenix returns," he stated. "You're just in time." Inside, the minister was just finishing up the ceremony. After he asked Hallas if he agreed to love his bride for better or for worse, Hallas replied, "I... I do!" "And you, Mina Inerz?" he asked the disguised Lina. "I do," replied Lina. However, she had more important, real things to worry about - Cally. "Why isn't she trying anything?" she thought, looking left and right with her eyes. Cally, however, laughed confidently from where she was sitting. After Hallas and Lina exchanged rings, the minister said, "You may now kiss the bride." Hallas's eyes lit up like this, glancing expectantly in Lina's direction. However, the cold glance which Lina shot back would've put an angry rhinoceros to shame. "W-W-We'll save that for later," Hallas decided uncomfortably. Cally took the opportunity as she had planned. "Now, everyone," she began, standing up, "shouldn't we see the bride and groom kiss?" Her daughter stood up, as well. "You're supposed to kiss after you exchange rings," she agreed. "It's part of the ceremony. That's when the marriage really begins." Cally supported this one last time, and the minister agreed as well. Hallas looked exceptionally worried, while Lina looked exceptionally frustrated. "K-K-Kiss him? I can't!" Hallas pleaded with Lina to go through with it, but the very mention of kissing him made her cringe in disgust. Cally and her daughter both smirked in triumph from their sitting position. "Just kiss me and we can settle this," he encouraged her. As he flipped the veil over Lina's head to expose her face, Lina looked back in angry decline. "One kiss and you get five thousand gold pieces," he reminded her. Lina's mind filled with the possibility, but was it enough? Amelia and Gourry stood off to the side, wondering if Lina was really going to do it. "Depends on how forceful the groom is," commented Gourry. Just as he leaned in to kiss her, saying "I'm sorry" all the way, Lina stepped down hard on his foot. Hallas trembled a bit in pain, and Lina put back her veil, but he suddenly got a hold of himself, flipped back the veil, and said, "I won't be beaten!" "Jeez, he's really gonna do it!" Gourry declared. Hallas leaned in for one final try to kiss Lina. "Five thousand gold pieces! Five thousand! Five thousand!" he whispered to her as he got closer. Lina suddenly screamed, kicking Hallas across the whole room, and shocking everyone. Cally stood up to her full height in triumph. "Thank you for such a wonderfully overdone farce... Lina Inverse!" she shouted. The crowd was thrown into confusion, with Lina realizing that her cover had been blown. "This wedding is a fake!" Cally shouted triumphantly, with her daughter celebrating along with her. "Now, then, men! Capture these criminals!" The doors burst open, and Zangulus charged through with his sword. "It's been a while, Lina Inverse! Gourry Gabriev!" he shouted. The Slayers and Cally were equally surprised to see the bounty hunter bursting in. "I challenge you!" he shouted to Lina. Cally clenched her fist. "Who is this guy? He's ruining everything!" she complained. "Things are really getting complicated now..." Lina commented, sweatdropping. She looked up in sudden surprise as she spotted the ice ball hurtling towards her. Getting a hold of herself, she counteracted with a Fireball, causing an explosion in the mansion. As the spell blasted out of the roof, the bandits outside regarded that as the signal from Cally, and decided to rush in. Meanwhile, the audience for the wedding, running for their lives, fled from the area. Lina looked up at Vrumugun, hovering in the sky above the blasted roof. "Vrumugun? You mean you didn't die?!" Lina asked in surprise. Zangulus charged, shouting, "Die, Gourry!" as he went. Gourry parried with his own sword, and the two began a swordfight. Lina was surprised yet again as the bandits came rushing in, and frantically tried to dodge the weapons everywhere that were going for her. "What are we going to do now, Mother?" Cally's daughter asked, frightened. Just then, a spare object was hurtled from the fight, hitting her square in the head, and knocking her out cold. "Paula!" Cally exclaimed, bending down to check that her daughter was OK. As she got to her feet, she stared resolutely into the fight. "Everything's gone to hell!" she muttered angrily, and then vowed to kill Lina with her bare hands. She pushed aside the bandits, calling for everyone to get out of her way. Vrumugun merely hovered and watched as she cast a Flare Arrow, and then a Fireball, sending a burned and charred Lina scrambling up the stairs. As the smoke cleared, it's seen that the bottom of her dress had been cut off, and there were light burn marks all over her clothes. She got to her feet, and raced off down the hall. Gourry shouted words of concern, but then had no time to think as he was forced to fight off a bunch of bandits. Cally confronted Vrumugun as he approached down the same hallway Lina had run. "Lina's mine!" she declared, but Vrumugun replied coldly that he wouldn't allow that. While they started to argue more again, a yell is heard from behind, and then Cally is hit square in the face with a jar of some kind. It was Amelia, still in the maid's outfit. "Not you..." Vrumugun muttered. Amelia struck a couple of poses, reciting a mini-justice speech. After she finished, she fired a Bram Blazer attack at Vrumugun - no effect at all. "Freeze Arrow!" he shouted, and as Amelia flew left and right in the narrow space to try and dodge, she hit her head on the ceiling, crumpling to the ground. Cally got back up and sprinted down the hallway towards Lina. "That's right, just keep playing like that!" she yelled over her shoulder. "The bounty's mine!" Lina put her foot down, firing a spell at Cally, an Elmekia Lance. Cally dodged, counteracting with a Fireball, sending Lina flying, and burning off even more of the bottom of her dress. Hallas was seen crouching behind a desk of some kind, muttering in despair about how his house was being burned down. Gourry crawled up to him, and told him to hold off the opponents while he went to find Lina. Hallas looked back in confusion, wondering who he was in charge of keeping away. Gourry pushed Hallas forward, and Hallas could only let out bewildered shouts as he saw that all of the bandits, as well as Zangulus, was against him. Gourry supposedly took off in Lina's direction. Back upstairs, Lina crouched in a doorway; her dress was very torn up by now. "I can't keep hiding like this," she muttered to herself. An explosion caused Lina to grimace, and Cally rushed in. After some small talk, Cally fired another Flare Arrow at Lina. She didn't react quickly enough, and tripped over a chair; the attack would hit her head-on. "Lina!" Gourry shouted, rushing in at the last second. With a swish of his Sword of Light, the flames were extinguished. Lina looked in surprise at Gourry holding the Sword of Light out and ready. Meanwhile, she decided to hide behind a table, since she wasn't "looking decent", considering the condition of her dress. "Why are you so shy?" Gourry asked. "It's not like you have breasts or anything." At this comment, Lina threw something at Gourry, knocking the guy out cold. "Oops..." she muttered. At that moment, the whole company chose to arrive: Hallas, Amelia, Zangulus, and Vrumugun all showed up in the small room. Zangulus shook Gourry, ordering him to get up for a duel, but to no avail. "You won't escape us now!" he declared. "Kinda convenient, you all being here." However, Cally stopped Zangulus's progress, wanting the reward for himself. "I'll finish this," Vrumugun declared. "First one wins!" Cally countered. Standing side by side, they fired their spells. "Freeze Arrow!" Vrumugun shouted, while Cally fired a Flare Arrow. Lina, Amelia, and Hallas gasped as the attack flew toward them, but the spells merely cancelled each other out; no effect. "I-I don't believe this," Cally complained. "Miss Lina!" Amelia shouted, throwing Lina a piece of her maid costume. "Thank you!" Lina replied, wrapping the cloth around herself. "Now I can blast the lot of them!" "Wait a minute!" Hallas shouted, but it was too late. "Mega Brando!" Lina yelled, and the whole place went up in a brilliant explosion. From the thick, thick smoke, a horse and cart can be seen, with Amelia handling the horse. While bandits ran after them as fast as they could, Vrumugun and Zangulus were left charred and smoking. "They escaped again..." Zangulus muttered disbelievingly. The three had a short discussion as they went, with the main points being that Lina didn't kiss Hallas and so didn't get 5000 gold pieces, Lina blowing up Hallas's house, and yet Lina also saving Hallas from Cally's wicked spell. Lina, however, didn't care. She merely stared dumbfounded, even as Gourry tried to get her attention. "Five thousand gold pieces, gone!" she shrieked, realizing her horrible mistake. Lina had on her normal clothes now, and the wedding dress flapped away in the breeze. "Helping people out is good. Oh, whoever thought THAT one up?" she wondered. "Not only is Vrumugun still alive, but Sairaag's still so far away!" But the cart still carries them ever forward. |
