Slayers
Episode 7: GIVE UP! But, Just Before We Do, the Sure Kill Sword Appears!
A clear sky is seen, and the screen pans downward through the trees to a clearing. Zelgadis is standing by the edge of the river, and Lina is standing on a large rock in the river. She appears to be fishing.

Lina let out a happy giggle as she caught another fish; it's flipped over by Lina onto a pile of fish that can only be partially seen. "Don't you think that's enough?" Zelgadis asked, and it's seen that the enormous pile of fish is almost up past Zelgadis's shoulders! Lina still believed that they needed to catch more, since they had fought Rezo the entire day the day before.

"Hurry up! We have to be in the next town before nightfall," Zelgadis told her. Lina told him that she knew. A dark shape is seen flashing through some of the trees in the background, and Zelgadis dashed over to Lina, picked her up, brought her to shore, and threw her to the ground in an instant.

Looking back, Zelgadis saw that several trolls were stalking them again. The mood had changed to one of battle. The trolls roared menacingly. "Three trolls, huh?" Zelgadis asked. "Aw, again?!" Lina complained. "I want to get something to eat!" "You could use a diet," Zelgadis stated bluntly, still looking at the trolls. At this, Lina got very angry. "I dare you to find an ounce of fat on me!" she challenged, clenching her fists. "Here they come!" Zelgadis announced.

The trolls lunged, and Lina shrank back awkwardly, not sure what she should do.

Still looking, Gourry called for Lina in the woods. "Where are you?" he shouted, looking all about. "Lina!" he called again. "Where are you?" He saw a bush move, and, moving up to it, he asked, "Lina? Is that you?" When he parted the bushes however, an enormous monster stood up. It had a gray body with tiger-like stripes, standing upward with horns and tusks. "Well, it's not Lina. Maybe it could be..." Gourry pondered. At this point, he wasn't even looking at the creature. He just stood looking the other direction, seemingly in order to concentrate, although the monster was clearly almost twice as big as him. It raised one of its arms, and slashed at Gourry. Gourry easily dodged without even turning around. "Well, the temper's certainly a good match," Gourry commented. The monster sweatdropped, and then tried a different ferocious approach; it lunged its head forward, prepared to bite Gourry with its enormous teeth. Once again, Gourry was able to defeat it without turning around. Bringing his hand up behind his back, he flicked one of the tusks, and it was broken clear off, landing on the ground nearby. The monster whimpered, its eyes wavering in disbelief. "But where the heck did Lina get to?" The creature suddenly dashed off in a mad retreat, and Gourry sighed out of frustration. It looked like he had quite some battle sense.

Lina jumped out of the way, dodging the troll's attack. She stood next to Zelgadis as the trolls approached. "Maybe I'm not in perfect shape, but I'll give it a try!" Lina announced. "Fire...Ball!" She fired a perfect blast at the trolls, and they exploded into oblivion. "Well, it looks like my old stuff is back," Lina announced happy. "It would seem your magical powers have returned," Zelgadis agreed. "I'm not such a basket case all the time. Anyway now let's have our fish," Lina decided happily. She looked all around with a very happy look on her face. Zelgadis just stood, looking at her. "They're..." he said, pointing toward their location. Lina look, and saw some VERY charred fish; they looked like they'd been burnt entirely. "They're charcoal," Lina finished, gaping. "It would seem they got caught inside the fireball," Zelgadis continued, bluntly. Lina sighed. "I'm so hungry..."

A bush moved, and rustling is heard. A berserker is seen parting the bush. "And now it's berserkers," Zelgadis announced, turning around to see. Lina let out a sound of frustration. "Would you just lay off?!" she screamed, and the sound of her voice echoed everywhere.\

In a pitch-dark room, a large glowing blue circle is seen, and dust is kicking up around it, showing its power. Rezo stands before it, his arms held up, performing some kind of magic. The mood is foreboding as Rezo speaks. "To darkness, I pledge myself," Rezo states ominously. Lifting up his arms as he finished and raising his voice, the dust around the magic circle suddenly gathers together and swirls around the center. As it takes shape, the dust disappears, replaced by an odd kneeling figure. "So, you're come, Zorom of the monster race," Rezo declares.

The luminescent blue figure seems to be that of a man with glowing red eyes and a long, flowing beard. It clearly had no physical body, for the body had a feel of transparency, most likely a hologram. "I'm honored you have called upon me," Zorom replies in a raspy voice. After a debriefing, Zorom sets off on his task: To retrieve the Philosopher's Stone, and to kill the traitor. "Your kind enjoys human fear more than anything else," Rezo says, aware that Zorom would kill the traitor slowly. Zorom informs him that he would kill just slow enough that they would both be satisfied. With that said, he vanished, and the blue circle faded. Swirling his cape about him, Rezo stalked off into the shadows, as well.

Along a road in a town, it seems that all is deserted. Lina and Zelgadis are the only ones talking, and Lina is leaning on a staff as she walks, for some reason. "I'm hungry, I'm tired, and I wanna take a bath," Lina complained, limping along. Zelgadis, as usual, was standing tall, his eyes looking ever forward. "Can you walk without talking?" he asked without turning around. Lina was sorely disappointed that this was ghost town; she had been hoping for comfort. "This place has been deserted for at least 10 years," Zelgadis announced. "Besides that, why have those guys been able to find us?" Lina asked, still limping. "Ah... That's because I'm here," Zelgadis replied, suddenly stopping, and turning to face Lina; she looked with surprise and listened. "My body was created by Rezo's magic," Zelgadis continued. "I appear to smell like him to them as they walk. Rezo can locate me any time he desires." Lina understands, realizing why their enemies had been able to find them so often.

When Lina asked if they'd be able to locate them right now, Zelgadis replied they would. At this, Lina threw aside her staff, standing tall. "Would you just come out already?!" she yelled, her voice echoing everywhere. "Another overblown entrance, huh Dilgear?" Zelgadis asked, looking at the newly arrived Dilgear that had just jumped down from a building. Dilgear chuckled. "Hello there, my dear Zel," he said. Snapping his fingers, trolls, berserkers, skeleton warriors by the dozens showed up out of all the dark places in the town.

Lina gaped at them, and asked if this was a little bit too overblown. Dilgear asked Zelgadis if he could handle this many, seeming confidant. "Wait a second!" Lina yelled. "Aren't you forgetting someone here?" Dilgear looked startled, and looked in every direction but at Lina, wondering who she was talking about. "Who?" he asked. "Me, you simp! Me!" Lina yelled indignantly, pointing to herself. When Dilgear scoffed at her, she told him he'd be eating those words. "I'm not the wimpy girl you've gotten to know!" she announced, starting to gather energy between her hands. She was obviously very angry. Zelgadis informed her that if she exhausted her powers, she would be helpless against Rezo.

"That's what he's planning with all this." Lina agreed, and decided she'd better stick with "the small stuff". Lina began to chant the incantation to a Fireball. Dilgear was smart enough to know what was happening, and ordered his men to attack. As the monsters charged, Lina finished her incantations, and cast the Fireball. Dilgear gasped, and Lina cast the spell, causing an enormous explosion. Fire burned everywhere; Lina's magic was definitely all back.

Lina and Zelgadis had jumped up onto opposite roofs to avoid the explosion, and when Lina had announced her powers were all back, Zelgadis decided, "Then we'll divide the battle between us!" Lina shouted back an approval, and they went their opposite ways on the roofs of the buildings. When Dilgear saw that they'd went opposite directions, he decided to go "this way", and lead his troops in the direction of Zelgadis.

"Hold it! They're all just going after Zelgadis!" Lina realized as she was dashing, and looked back over her shoulder. Suddenly, Zorom materialized near her, and she tripped over a chimney out of surprise. Turning to face the odd glowing figure, Lina asked, "I assume you're another one of Rezo's goons?" "And what if I am?" Zorom asked, looking back with 5 glowing eyes. "Let's see... What else?" Lina decided, and shot a Fireball at the creature.

"A waste of time," it stated, and floated up almost instantly, dodging the blast. "That self-confidence can work against you," Lina stated, grinning. The creature looked over its shoulder, and was surprised to see the Fireball coming back. It hit him, and he let out a sound of surprise as it engulfed him in flames. Lina stood looking at the floating, burning figure from her place on the roof. "Shouldn't let your guard down!" Lina declared, victorious, and head her own words used against her when she discovered that the creature was still alive and well. It turned to face her, its oddly illuminated figure now in oddly illuminated flames. It shot many blasts at Lina, using her own Fireball energy, from the flames around it.

Lina let out a yell as she was struck by one, and she fell from the roof, and landed on her feet, though crouched over, on the ground. "I did let my guard down. Well played, my dear," the creature complimented her, its form still flaming. "But that sorcery will not defeat me!" Realizing that the magic had no effect on her opponent, Lina knew that it had to be a genuine monster. The monster clarified this as it concentrated all of the remaining power from the Fireball into a whip. Now, its form was clearly defined, and it was shown wearing a green cloak, its flowing beard hanging down in front of him; none of the odd luminescence from before was present. The battle had started.

It held the fiery whip high above him, and struck the ground with it, showing its power. The ground cracked, and rocks flew everywhere. Lina continued to duck, and lifted her hand to shield her face from the debris. Tell me where the Philosopher's Stone is, and I'll let you live," the monster said to Lina confidently. "Bad guys never mean that when I say it," Lina replied, smiling. "Shall I give you my word?" the monster asked, and swung the fiery whip again, this time at Lina. Lina looked on in surprise, but determination.

Meanwhile, Zelgadis leaped across the rooftops, being pursued by Dilgear and his minions (who were on the ground). Zelgadis jumped down threw a hole in one of the roofs into the house. Dilgear, seeing this, ran inside the house with all of his troops. They looked around, not seeing Zelgadis, until suddenly... "It's a trap! Clear out!" Dilgear realized all of a sudden. The whole building then collapsed onto them; it was clear that this was what Zelgadis had planned.

The fiery whip hit the ground again, missing Lina as she leaped into the air back onto a roof. She continued to mock the monster by saying that it didn't look the type to keep promises. The whip was swung again, and Lina barely dodged it by jumping to the side; debris flew everywhere from where the roof had been struck. As a counterattack, Lina began to cast a spell. She cast a Digger Bolt of blue energy at the monster, but it merely counteracted by shooting a seemingly infinite amount of yellow darts of energy, canceling out Lina's spell. "What?" Lina yelped in alarm. "I can't dodge them!" It seemed like she was going to feel the pain of a thousand spikes soon.

Out of nowhere, a sword is seen, and it destroyed the yellow energy with one swing. The monster looks in curiosity. As the remaining spikes struck the ground harmlessly, Lina drops to the ground, astonished. A foot in a blue boot touches the ground in the foreground; a warrior of some kind had come to Lina's aid. Panning up, it's discovered that Gourry had saved her. He lands, turns around, and remarks casually, "So, we meet again, Lina." "Gourry!" Lina responds happily.

The monster looks on with interest. "So, you have another ally here?" he asks. Gourry replies that he's not an ally; he's Lina's guardian, much to Lina's dislike. "Her guardian, you say?" the monster asks. "Where is the Philosopher's Stone?" Gourry looks with confusion. "Philosopher's Stone?" he asks. "Those guys are just after this Orihalcon statue, right?" he says as he takes out the statue. WHACK! Lina hits Gourry over the head; "Don't show it to him!" she screams at him, as Gourry grimaces in surprise. "The Stone's hidden inside that thing!" Lina yells. Gourry's eyes widened. "Well, how was I supposed to know that?"

The monster chuckles, and now knows where the Stone is. "Now you will die." he declares. Gourry smiled confidently. "We can't have people dying until their turn. Right, Pops?" This said, Gourry draws his sword, and begins to lunge at the monster. "Gourry, wait," Lina says, as she grabs hold of a piece of Gourry's hair to stop him. "What?" he asks. "Never mind, just get your ear down here," Lina beckons, still kneeling down. After Gourry leans down, Lina grabs hold of him, and takes off, seemingly carrying Gourry under her arm with ease. Gourry, bewildered, asked what they were doing. "Just run you idiot! RUN!" Lina yells as she speeds off with Gourry. The monster chuckles. "Run, by all means. It makes it all the more fun." Zorom laughed again as the Slayers beat a hasty retreat.

A rock shifts, and Dilgear bursts out of it. He had fallen for the trap. Zelgadis smiled confidently from the chimney where he was sitting. Furious, Dilgear hurried after Zelgadis with all of his troops. "Get him!" he yelled.

Elsewhere, a building is seen. "I can't take this smell!" Gourry complains. Lina and Gourry begin to have a discussion, and Lina says that the place they're hiding in looks like a barn. "Why do we have to do this?" Gourry asked. "You were about to fight him, weren't you?" After some talk, Lina tells Gourry that he was trying to fight a purebred monster; his sword wouldn't even scratch it. "I see," Gourry says, looking naive as ever as he glanced at his sword. "Don't just say 'I see'!" Lina tells him, not satisfied. She tries explaining that a purebred monster has a spirit body, so it can't be hurt in typical ways. "You got that?" she asked. ""But why are they using a guy like that to steal the statue?" Gourry asked. Exasperated, Lina begins chasing Gourry all around the inside of the hay they're hiding in, and basically sums up the entire story of the Philosopher's Stone in about 10 seconds. It seemed like Gourry was hopeless to understanding the situation. "Well I understand one thing," Gourry says. "What?" Lina asks, in anticipation. "You really have no breasts at all, do you?" Lina promptly kicked Gourry in the face in response.

As Lina's foot was still up in the air, the ground suddenly began to shake. Lina stopped what she was doing. "What the...?" she muttered. From the outside, the barn is seen shaking; all of a sudden, it explodes. Lina lets out a frightened yelp as she and Gourry are blown out.

Zorom laughs again. "You may be good at skipping rope, but you're awful at hide and seek!" he mocks. His claw-like hands looked menacing as he continued to talk to them. "I'm glad. When Lord Rezo regains his sight, the first thing he'll see... shall be your remains!" The mood had changed to a very tense one.

Meanwhile, Zelgadis was having no trouble defeating his opponents. Inside a building, he destroys two skeleton warriors with one stroke of his sword. Then, he kills a troll, and easily burns its body to ashes with another spell. Dilgear looks on in disbelief and frustration. Zelgadis began stepping towards Dilgear, amid the fiery surroundings he had created. "I'd say that puts us on equal footing..." he states. "Damn..." Dilgear says, his teeth bared, and his eyes determined. ""What kind of monster are you?" "You're the last person who should call me a monster!" Zelgadis says back. Dilgear has nothing to say to this; he just nervously backs up through the doorway. Looking behind him, it seems that Zolf and Rodimus has arrived! "Zolf! Rodimus!" Dilgear exclaims happily. "You finally came! I'm saved!" Zelgadis, however, only looks on in coldness, as always.

Zorom faces Lina and Gourry, and unleases a double stream of fire, which they barely dodge. "Lina, can you try to distract him?" Gourry asks. "Distract him?" Lina asks in disbelief. Gourry obviously wouldn't be able to defeat this monster. However, Gourry is busy saying "Yow! Ow!" as he tries frantically to dodge the fire. "You just don't listen to anyone, do you?" Lina asks in exasperation. "Oh well... Flare Arrow!" She casts the spell at Zorom, and he easily blocks it.  Gourry comes charging with his sword, and Zorom shoots another blast of fire from his hand. Gourry jumps up to avoid it, and dodges a blast from Zorom's opposite hand as he plunges through the air. Making a direct hit, Gourry cuts the monster right in half! However, the two haves just chuckle, and form back into one; Zorom wasn't injured in the slightest. The nails on his clawlike hands suddenly get impossibly long, and attack at Gourry like living spikes. Gourry jumps backwards, performing several acrobatic maneuvers to dodge the nails, which retract back into Zorom's hands after their job had been done.

"You dodge well. And the girl casts spells with no small skill," Zorom admits. "Well, then, perhaps it's time I stopped playing around." Lina looks on in anticipation, and Zorom begins to gather a black aura around him. "Now what?" Lina asks. Zorom lets out a yell, and the black energy connects with him, transforming him into a considerably larger being. He now has four huge arms that protrude from his body like snakes, and his hooded figure is still the same, along with his 5 eyes and long flowing beard.

Gourry sweatdrops. "Doesn't really have much taste, does he?" "Very weird..." Lina agress. Zorom chuckles again, and then shoots four simultaneous blasts of fire from his hands. Lina and Gourry yelp, and dodge out of the way.
Dilgear laughs at Zelgadis. "Three against one! I'd say we have the advantage now!" he boasts, referring to the still-silent Rodimus and Zolf. Zelgadis merely looks on in silence. Dilgear mocks Zelgadis, and then begins to laugh. Rodimus walks slowly up to Zelgadis, and then bows with his axe. "We've finally found you," he says. Dilgear's eyes open wide with alarm. "Rodimus?!"

Rodimus's axe makes a clanging sound as he strikes it once against the earth. "Fool!" he says. "My loyalty lies with Master Zelgadis! Whatever nonsense that Red Priest talks of, my duty is not with him!"

"DIE!" Dilgear yells, as he charges at Rodimus, and then lets out a painful gasp as Rodimus plunges his axe into Dilgear's body. He stumbles over to one side. "Rodimus.. Damn you..." Dilgear says, and drops his sword.

"Don't forget about me!" Zolf says, picking up the sword. "Zolf..?" Dilgear asks in disbelief. Zolf slashes across Dilgear's right arm, and Dilgear falls back against the building, in great pain. Then, Zolf shoots about two dozen energy bolts, each one impaling Dilgear; Dilgear then falls to the ground, defeated. "Just wait until I come back to life!!" he yells one last time, and then slumps over, dead. Zolf and Rodimus turn to Zelgadis, but he just smiles; the job was complete.

Explosions are seen on the rooftops. "Lina, I'm going in. Cover me!" Gourry says. Lina tries to explain that it's hopeless, but Gourry wouldn't listen. As Lina continues to tell him to stop, Gourry begins to walk up to the monster, taking out a needle as he walks, and sheathing his sword. The mood changes from that of despair to that of hope. Zorom looks in disbelief. "You're not thinking I can be defeated by that needle!" he says. Looking thoughtful, Gourry admits that he didn't think so. "So there IS some logic to you. Then what are you doing to do?" Zorom asks. "I'm going to do this," Gourry says, putting the needle to the hilt of his sword, where it makes a clicking noise. 'Now do you understand?"

Both Lina and Zorom look on in disbelief. "How about now?" Gourry asks, drawing his sword. The blade is gone, and Gourry only holds up the hilt. "I understand one thing. You're a pathetic fool!" Zorom says back, energy gathering in all four of his hands. Looking strangely confidant, Gourry looks back. "Oh, there's no choice now," Lina says, and begins to chant the incantation to the Dragonslave as Zorom prepares to fire his blasts. The sky has darkened with the energy. "LIGHT, COME FORTH!" Gourry sudddenly says, and a sword made of light protrudes from the hilt. Lina gasps in surprise. The blade making a buzzing sound as it was swung, Gourry struck Zorom with it, and he was cut in half, and defeated, with one hit. He yelled one last time as his body was obliterated in a huge explosion that lit up the whole place.

Gourry stands with the sword, still in a battle stance. "The Sword of Light..." Lina says quietly. "The legendary sword that killed the great beast Zanifar with one stroke!" Gourry sheaths the sword, and Lina looks at him with glistening eyes. "Gourry..." she says. "Give me that sword!"

Gourry grimaces in exaspaeration. "Now hold on. How about saying 'thank you' or something?" Lina says that she can thank him later; she only wants the sword. "I'll give you 500 silver pieces for it!" she says. "taht's only enough for a regular sword!" Gourry complains. "What kind of idiot would sell the Sword of Light for that little?" Lina looks with wide eyes, not believing that Gourry was actually smart enough to make the decision.

Gourry further explains that the Sword of Light was a family treasure, and that he wouldn't sell it for any price. Still happy and hopeful, Lina says, "Give me the sword! Gourry!" Gourry leans against the wall, sweatdropping. He wouldn't give it up.

"Seems yuou made it through OK," Zelgadis says, facing them. "Zelgadis!" Gourry exclaims, reaching for his sword. Lina hastily explains that Zelgadis isn't their enemy now, although Gourry had no idea why. Zolf and Rodimus were with Zelgadis as well. "We've been through a lot, but we're on the same side now," says Zolf. He unwraps the bandages around his head; it seemed he had fully healed. He was no longer the "mummy man". "Wow..." Lina says, looking at him. Laughing, she says, "I forgive you!" She shakes hands with Zolf, as Gourry looks on is disbelief, and Rodimus and Zelgadis look on matter-of-factly.

Lina thinks to herself that she had finally caught up with Gourry, but they still had Rezo to deal with... It wasn't over yet...
