"You know, sometimes people think that a home is a place,
it can be a person."
- Gabrielle

Everyone has family. Here we meet the families of Xena & Gabrielle.

From Amphipolis to Poteidaia, it's time to meet the folks.

Xena's mother. We first experience Cyrene as being bitter towards her daughter for bringing shame upon her village and, consequently, she is very mistrustful of Xena's motives.

When it appears that Xena has, once again, betrayed her, she turns her back on her.
However, when she realises that Xena has really changed, she embraces her and welcomes her back.
We meet Xena's mother again in "The Furies", when Xena must avenge her father's murder or remain cursed with persecution and madness by the Furies. Cyrene tells Xena that Atrius, Xena's father, returned unexpectedly from war one night and they had a night of passion together.
Even after Xena convinces the Furies that Ares was the culprit that night, Cyrene seems unconcerned that her daughter may actually be a half-god and fails to question whether or not Ares is actually Xena's father!

In "Amphipolis Under Siege", Cyrene finally gets to hold her granddaughter, Eve, although this is the first and last time she does so.

By "Haunting of Amphipolis", we find out that Cyrene was accused of being a witch and was subsequently burnt at the stake by the villagers of Amphipolis. Mephistopheles told Xena that he would continue to torment her mother in Hell unless she gave him some of Eve's blood. Xena eventually does so, in order to free Cyrene's soul. Once freed, Cyrene says goodbye to Xena, Eve and Gabrielle and then her spirit departs.

Xena encounters Atrius in the episode "Ties That Bind". He claims he is her long-lost father but Xena is not convinced.

He finally persuades her that he is who he says he is and, when a group of villagers torture him and leave him to die, Xena vows vengeance. However, she eventually realises that this man is actually Ares, posing as her father.
We later learn from "The Furies" that Xena's father was an avid supporter of Ares, god of war. He unexpectedly returned home from war one day and, as a result, Xena was conceived by Cyrene.

Later, after visiting Ares' temple he came home in a drunken rage and tried to murder Xena. Cyrene killed him with an axe rather than let him murder her daughter.

The brother of Xena who ran away when Cortese attacked Amphipolis. Ashamed of his actions, he swore vengeance on Cortese and spent many years tracking him down.

Finally, he manages to infiltrate Corteses' army and is waiting for the opportunity to attack when he encounters Xena.

After a number of slanging matches, Xena gives Toris the opportunity to kill Cortese in cold blood, which he finds he cannot do.

Instead, he and Xena settle their differences and he decides to go home for a while, which is the last we have heard of him so far. As Xena has been home since and he is not there, we can only assume he has moved on.

Xena's younger brother who was killed when Cortese attacked Amphipolis.

In "Remember Nothing", Xena is able to relive her past and Lyceus is alive again.

He is presented as a strong-minded young man who believes in fighting for what is right, even if that leads to his own death.

Husband to Hecuba and father to Gabrielle and Lila. Herodotus dislikes Xena, seeing her as responsible for Gabrielle's running away from home.

When Lila's daughter was kidnapped and sold to Gurkhan, Herodotus, Hecuba and Lila's husband travelled to North Africa to try to buy her back. In response, Gurkhan had them all beheaded.

Gabrielle and Lila's mother and wife to Herodotus. She first appears in "Sins Of The Past" when Hector has rounded up the villagers, ready to be sold as slaves.

After being rescued by Xena, Hecuba tends her wounds.
Later, in "A Family Affair", Hecuba mistakenly believes that Joxer is Gabrielle's love interest. She also (mistakenly) believes that Joxer is a brave and seasoned warrior.
At first, she is grateful to Xena for helping them against the Destroyer but when Hope, posing as Gabrielle, pretends that Xena beat her, Hecuba asks Xena to leave, telling her she is no longer welcome in her house.

Gabrielle's sister. In "Sins of the Past", Lila says goodbye to Gabrielle as she sneaks out of her home village. We next see her in "The Prodigal" when Gabrielle returns home.

Lila is bitter that Gabrielle has not visited her and that she seems to be more interested in Xena and their adventures together than in her sister, who believes she must appear boring by comparison.

By the end of the episode, Lila realises that Gabrielle has changed and that she would not be happy staying at home. She also realises that Gabrielle has not forgotten her.

Lila is not seen again until "A Family Affair" when Hope returns and tries to kill Lila. Of course, Lila does not, at first, realise that Hope is not Gabrielle.
Following this, we don't encounter Lila again until "Takes One to Know One", when everyone gathers to wish Gabrielle a happy birthday.

Lila appears once more in "Who's Gurkhan?". Having believed Gabrielle and Xena to be dead after 25 years of no word, she is shocked to see her sister on her doorstep, especially as her older sister is now younger than her! All is not well, however, and Lila tells Gabrielle of their parent's murder by Gurkhan. Gabrielle also finds out that Lila got married and has a daughter, although her husband was also killed by Gurkhan. Gabrielle promises Lila that she will go to Africa and get her daughter back.

The son of Borias and Xena.

When Borias was killed, Xena asked her enemy, the Centaur leader Kaleipus, to raise and care for her child, as she was afraid she would not be able to protect him from her enemies.
As Borias had helped the Centaurs, Kaleipus agreed. Many years later, Xena returns for Solan but discovers that he hates her, believing she killed his father.

Xena denies this and eventually proves this to Solan but finds herself unable to tell him she is his mother.

Hope is the embodiment of Dahak. She is his physical hand in the world and she is also the face of evil for Gabrielle and Xena.

Whilst in Britannia, Gabrielle was horribly raped by Dahok and Hope was the result. Hope is the evil spawn of Dahak and Gabrielle.
She is half mortal and half god, and she was born within a matter of days after conception. She also grew very quickly, and along with the physical growth came the maturation of her evil.
She killed within hours of life. Xena recognized her for what she was but Gabrielle couldn’t bring herself to face the fact that her daughter was evil incarnate. So she convinces Xena she has killed Hope herself in order to save her life.
She places Hope in a basket and prays the gods will keep her safe and that she will 'be good'.

Xena and Gabrielle return to the Centaur village where Kaleipus and his people the Centaurs are preparing to sign a peace treaty with Ephiny, standing queen of the Amazon’s in Gabrielle’s place.

As it turns out Hope is still alive and she frees Callisto to help her kill Xena and Solan.

Gabrielle is again unwilling to believe her daughter is evil and ignores the warning signs that it is her daughter who is the mysterious ally Callisto alludes to in the forest when she made her first attempt to kill Solan.

It’s not until Hope unwittingly tells on herself that she killed Xena’s son that Gabrielle stops reaching to believe in her daughters innocence and is forced to poison her own child. This necessary evil is a pain Gabrielle will never recover from.

In the “Bitter Suite” Xena and Gabrielle are forced to accept their responsibility in the events leading up to Solan’s death. Thanks to Solan’s efforts, Xena and Gabrielle are reunited from their rift and their love for one another becomes stronger than ever.

Later, Hope is reborn in the image of Gabrielle and Xena sets out to kill her. However, Ares has made a deal with the Fates and he tells Gabrielle that if Xena kills Hope then her life thread will be cut and she will die.
In order to prevent this, Gabrielle throws herself at Xena to prevent her from killing Hope. In doing so, she falls into a lavapit, taking Hope with her.

Unfortunately, it seems Gabrielle's sacrifice was in vain because Hope returns with the Destroyer, product of herself and Ares' union.

Posing as Gabrielle, Hope attempts to kill Lila, Gabrielle's sister and uses the Destroyer to try to kill Xena.

Gabrielle convinces the Destroyer that she is Hope and therefore, Hope is Gabrielle. As a result, the Destroyer kills Hope before realising its mistake.

Daughter of Lila and Gabrielle's niece. Sarah was captured by Gurkhan whilst Gabrielle was imprisoned in the ice cave.

Gabrielle's parents and Lila's husband went to Africa to negotiate Sarah's release but Gurkhan killed them.
Sarah became 'first wife' to Gurkhan and treated the other wives with cruelty, anxious to maintain her position in the household.
When Xena and Gabrielle arrive, disguised as captured slaves for Gurkhan's harem, Sarah feels threatened by the attention Gurkhan pays to them.
However, Xena and Gabrielle soon discover her true identity. They rescue her and take her back to Greece to be reunited with her mother.

The story of Xena's daughter Eve is quite amazing. Eve is the product of an "Immaculate Conception". That is, when a deity or a spiritual force conceives a child with a mortal, human being through supernatural means.

In this instance Callisto conceived Eve with Xena at the end of the Season Five episode "Fallen Angel", when she reaches out and touches Xena. This occurs just after Callisto helped Eli resurrect the Warrior Princess and Gabrielle.
Callisto's reasons? As she stated in the 100th episode "Seeds of Faith" she wanted to give back to Xena all they had taken from one another in their turbulent past: Life.

Xena also finds out that Callisto has a destiny, and that is to be reborn into the physical world to become "The Messenger".

Xena accepts Callisto's soul into her unborn child. This not only gives Callisto another chance to live in the mortal world, and have the happy life she was robbed of in her past, this gives Xena another chance to experience motherhood in ways she did not with her son Solan.
Xena: "Gabrielle, I want you to understand something. We both have families we were born into, but sometimes families change and we have to build our own. For me, our friendship binds us closer than blood ever could."
Gabrielle: "For me too."
