The pirate king, pactolus

The pirates have taken the remaining hostages away, and blocked a gate to prevent Xena from following. Xena must find a way to break through the gate, rescue the villagers, and settle the score with the pirate leader, Pactolus!

Sketch = To avenge Siras and find information on Gabrielle's whereabouts, you have to fight the pirate king, Pactolus. To do this, you must find a strategic way to break through the gate the pirate blocked for you, and rescue remaining villagers in the process.

Note = This level also has hostages to save, but there's no counter, which means you can get through the level even if the hostages die (now, you wouldn't want that to happen, would you...?). But every time you do save one, the hostage drops a health power-up. So I suggest you save them anyhow 'cause you're going to need them when you fight Pactolus and if you're not too skilled as yet.

Walkthrough = Run ahead to the T-junction and turn left, picking up scroll#1 on the way. See the burning gate ahead? You can't go through without dousing those icky flames (unless you want a charcoaled Xena running across your screen...). We will take care of that later. Return to the T-junction and go the other way this time, to Fisherman's Wharf. To get to the other end of the wharf, you need to jump over the crates. But as you can see, the first crate is way too far away to cover in one jump. So stand next to the pole from which a crate is hanging, fastened with the rope. Cut the rope, this will make the crate fall into the water, creating a clear path for Xena to jump across. Do this. (If at any time you fall in the water, you can return to the left side (next to the burning house) where a smaller crate can help you back on land. Just make sure you don't fall into sea)

Now here's a bit of fun you can have (you don't need it to finish the level). Aim you Chakram at the dead shark (dinner for the villagers? Who knows...) hanging from the poles. Every time you hit, some previous dinner of this shark will drop out of its mouth (like swords, anchors...and surfboards?).

It's time to go on with what you came here for (work, work, slave, slave). Follow yet another path of crates (take careful jumps). Before fixing your attention on the hay-wagon at the end, turn left for another -yummy!- Armour Upgrade. Now go kick the hay-wagon a couple of times. It will crash into the water-tank beyond, which in turn will knock into the flaming gate you want to go through, and put out the fire. Jump down and go through the opening. Take the health power-up on the left, then save the hostage on the right and get the health power-up he drops, just like every other hostage in this level will do. As you approach it, two funny-looking pirates will come to get you. Kill them (let's call them "donkey-ears" from now on, shall we? They have weird masks on!).

Right along the path, you'll find another hostage, just like in the corner on the right. As you walk along, four donkey-ears will dodge you, so take care of them. Also, grab the health power-up behind the flaming house. Continue along the path to a new area, where the leader of these pirate bums, king Pactolus, will greet you with a sneaky laugh. Don't go look for him yet, he's already chickened out. Save the hostage on the right. There is a hostage on either side of the burned cottage on the left. Behind it a donkey-ear is hiding. As you kill him, he'll drop the Oebalus Town Square Key. Use it to open the gate along the path. In the new area, it's showtime. First of all, get the Resurrection Jewel and scroll#2, which lie straight ahead. Three bald pirates will attack. Behind the huts on the left you'll find three health power-ups and a donkey-ear. Pactolus will confront you. Like the scroll told you, press X and O together. This will give your pal Pactolus a low blow (Ouch! Ooouchh!). It's really effective: a well-aimed kick will reduce about 30% of his health bar. While you're fighting Pactolus himself or any of his allies, try to make time to hit the bell in the center of the area with the Chakram. Once you do, a Golden Shield will drop down beneath it. (It will only work once.) Save the shield for Pactolus. It makes your combat with him even easier since you're invincible. When he's been hurt quite a lot, Pactolus will turn into a wuss and run away (again). Get the health power-up close to shore, by the ship. Three donkey-ears will charge you, and after that, Pactolus will be back. Repeat the low-blow-move till he can fight no more.

Xena: "Didn't your mother ever tell you not to play with matches? Who sent you here?"

Pactolus: "King Valarian paid us to distract you while he captured your friend. They've taken her to the island of Kronos."

Xena (draws sword): "This Valarian better have a big army!"
