Chapter 1
May 21, 1999
9:15 PM
Warwick, Rhode Island

The young boy took his hand from the armrest to straighten his tie.  He looked into a small mirror, which was embedded in the wall of the car, to see his reflection.  He wiped a trickle of sweat away that rolled down his cheek.  He was so nervous.  It was the eighth grade social at his junior high school and he was taking his girl friend, of a year and a half now, to the dance.  Though they had gone to dances before, he always got nervous but he knew Rose would calm him down.
He smoothed his pant leg as he looked at the driver in front of him.  He had told Rose his parents would pick them up but he wanted to surprise her.  He had rented a limousine to take her to the dance.  He knew she would tell him it was a waste of money but he wanted to prove how much she meant to him.
The boy looked over at the seat next to him.  A medium sized package, wrapped with a beautiful green bow was lying there.  He read the tag, which was attached to the box.  To Rose, I will always love you, Tom.  It was their eighteen-month anniversary today.  Tom wanted to take Rose to a dance that she would never forget.
The limousine parked in front of Rose’s house.  He nodded to the driver and got out of the limo.  He closed the door behind him and stood in Rose’s driveway for a minute.  He looked at the box in his hands and knew Rose would be happy.
He sighed deeply and walked up the front steps to her house.  He was wearing a black tuxedo with a white shirt.  His tie and cuffs were blue.  His hair was slick and wet.  Tom rang Rose’s doorbell and waited.  Rose’s mother answered.
“Please come in Tom.”  Rose’s mother said.  She gasped when she saw the limousine outside and smiled down at Tom.  “You didn’t have to do that.”
“I wanted to surprise her.”  Tom said.
Tom walked into the house.  The room he walked into was a pale pink and had flowered wallpaper.  Everything matched and it was very neat.  Tom had seen it many times before, but this time it was special.  It looked like a new beginning.
Rose’s mother walked into the other room.  Tom sat down on the couch, waiting.  Rose’s mother returned a few minutes later.  This time she had a camera.  Tom knew the annual photo routine.  He stood up, dropped the box, and walked towards the houseplants.  He stood straight and smiled his biggest smile.  The camera flashed three times before he got to sit down again.
A few minutes later Rose walked down the stairs.  Her hair was crimped and pulled back in a loose green ribbon.  Her dress was made out of green velvet.  Her nails were done with the faintest color, and her face was tinted with the a little bit of makeup.  She was a perfect date in Tom’s eyes.  She continued down the stairs.
Tom met her at the bottom and kissed her on the cheek.  Rose took her place near the plants.  Her mother took so many pictures that Tom couldn’t count.
“Mom, you’re going to run out of film.”  Rose complained.
“Okay, why don’t you two stand next to each other.  I’ll take a couple that way.”  Rose’s mom said.
Tom and Rose stood next to each other.  They truly did make a good couple.  When Rose’s mother was finished, Tom walked over to the couch.  He picked up the package and gave it to Rose.  She opened it quickly and gasped.  It was a beautiful white sweater.  It would look fantastic with her dress.
“Thank you.”  She finally was able to say.
Tom nodded his head, and helped her into it.  He thought it looked spectacular.  Tom and Rose walked out the door hand in hand as Rose’s mother started to cry.  She knew her little girl was no longer a little girl.
Rose gasped when she saw the limousine.  It was a dream come true.  This is just as she imagined the entire night.  Tom looked handsome and she looked fantastic.  She had already checked out the dancing area.  It was decorated beautifully and the whole mardi gras theme made it even more special.
“Tom, the sweater was beautiful but the limo is too much.”  Rose said.  She looped her arm through Tom’s.
“A special night for a very special girl.”  He said.
She blushed faintly and walked to the limo.  The driver came out and opened the door for both her and Tom.  She thanked him politely and slipped inside.  Tom followed her in.  They sat next to each other silently as they drove to the school.
The limo parked outside and promised to be back on time to pick them up.  Rose and Tom walked inside hand and hand.  They gave a teacher their tickets and they walked onto the dance floor.  Rose said hello to some of her friends and chatted with a few of the teachers.  She went over to the DJ, a science teacher in the building, and requested a song.  It came on a few minutes later.  It was a song by Celine Dion called “Because You Loved Me”.
Tom placed his hands on Rose’s waist and she put hers on his shoulders.  They danced slowly, to the beautiful, quiet song.  It was Rose’s and Tom’s song and they promised they would never listen to it if they weren’t together.  They danced until the end of the song.  Rose pulled away from Tom suddenly.  She was short of breath and her face had all of a sudden become hot.
“Tom, I’m going to go into the bathroom and freshen up a bit, okay?”  Rose asked not wanting to tell him she was feeling lousy.  She didn’t want to spoil the perfect night.
     “Yea sure, I’ll be waiting.”
Rose left the room and started toward the bathroom.  When she reached the door she realized how sick she felt.  She managed to open the bathroom door and stumble to the counter.  She leaned on the counter as her only support.
“Rose, you okay?”  A voice asked from behind her.  A close friend, Anna, was coming out of one of the bathroom stalls.
“Yea, I just feel kind of crappy.  I think I have the flu.”  Rose said sort of quietly and out of breath.  “Tell Tom I’m going home.  I’m gonna call someone to come pick me up.”
“Okay, I hope you feel better.”  Anna said.  She patted Rose on the back and walked out of the bathroom.
Rose watched as Anna walked out the door and then turned on the cold water and cupped her hands underneath it.  At first she let the water run through her fingers but then she splashed some on her face.  She grabbed a near by paper towel and began to dab her face.  She didn’t want to mess up her perfect makeup.  She clutched the sink to keep her from falling but nothing worker.  She fell to the ground.
She clutched her sweater as she could feel it begin to strangle her.  It wrapped itself around her neck until she could not longer breath.  She gasped for a breath but none came.  She outstretched her hand and began to move her lips but no sound came out.
Rose managed to look up as she heard the bathroom door being opened.  She saw a familiar face and she tried to plead for help but nothing was working.  She couldn’t make a sound and her limbs were too weak to move.  She took her last breath, closed her eyes, and died.

Chapter 2
May 23, 1999
3:34 PM
Nathaniel Greene Junior High School

Special Agent Dana Scully walked into the girl’s bathroom.  She looked around at the scene.  Two sinks lined the back wall and four stalls were inside the bathroom.  There was a cracked, dirty mirror towards the front.  Scully survey the walls before looking down to why she came.  She saw the outline of a body on the floor.  By the form of the outline, the hands and legs seemed to be scrunched under the body like she was huddling together.  Scully fingered the spot where the girls body had previously been less than forty-eight hours before.
Scully’s partner, Fox Mulder, was more hesitant in entering the bathroom.  He hung outside waiting for a police officer to talk to him.  Fortunately it was a Sunday so there were no students inside the large junior high.  Mulder surveyed the halls thinking of the kids who would flood them the next day.
“Agent Mulder.”  A man said from behind Mulder.  He turned around and faced the large police officer.
“Yes, hi.”  Mulder said shaking the man’s hand.
“We appreciate you coming on such short notice.  I tried getting the agents in Providence to come down but when I described the body to them they gave me your number.”  The officer explained.
Mulder nodded and took a file from the man’s hand.  Mulder flipped through pages and stared at the pictures of the dead girl.  “Who found the body?”
“A young teenage girl by the name of Piper Alexander.”  The man answered.
