Chapter 1 December 27, 1999 Warwick, Rhode Island 10:34 AM The wind brushed through the tree’s bare branches. The whistling wind swept through the large house. Piper shivered as she changed from shorts to pants. She looked over at her clock and saw it was near 10:30. She knew today was an annual cleaning day. Instead of spring cleaning her parents believed in winter break cleaning. It was two days after Christmas and the presents needed some place to go. “Piper, go wake up your sisters.” Piper’s mom yelled up the stairs. Now that it was winter break, Piper’s two older sisters, Suzanne and Lynn, were home for a month. The girls often fought when they were home but they also had some good times together. Like the day before Christmas Eve, they had stayed up until 1:30 in the morning making cookies together. Piper walked out of her room and went down the hallway. She went to Lynn’s room first, knowing she was the hardest to wake up. Piper knocked on the door but when no one answered, as she suspected would be the case, she opened the door. “Lynn, mom says it’s time to get up.” Piper said. When her sister didn’t respond, Piper walked to her bedside and shook her shoulder. “What?” Lynn grumbled, rolling over. “Get up so we can clean!” Piper yelled. Piper walked out of the room and went across the hall to her sister, Suzanne’s, room. She knocked on the door and heard a grumble from inside. “Get up!” Piper yelled through the door. Piper went back down the hall and went into her room. She grabbed Lynn’s CD player from the floor and brought it down stairs. She walked into the living room and set the CD player on the couch. Her mom walked in with a tray in her hand. “Did you get Suzanne and Lynn up?” She asked. “I think so.” Piper answered plugging the CD player in. Her mom walked out of the room and placed the tray on the table. Four other trays of cookies were on the table. She started placing random cookies on the tray obviously making an assortment. Piper left the room and went down to her basement. As she walked down the stairs she looked at the pictures she had strewn around the walls. “Hey Sailor V, what’s up?” Piper asked talking to the pictures around the wall. She went to her own CD player and picked her new Celine Dion CD to listen to. She brought it upstairs and popped it into the CD player. It turned on and a familiar song filled the air. Suzanne came downstairs and walked into the kitchen where Piper was secretly eating a cookie. Piper looked down at Suzanne’s feet and saw she was wearing shoes as well as a jacket. “Where are you going?” Piper asked finishing the cookie. “I need to get fire wood for my party tonight.” Suzanne explained walking towards the door. “Come out and help me.” Piper looked down at her bare feet and short sleeved shirt. She shrugged and followed her older sister outside. Suzanne turned around to see where Digger, their dog, was. She saw Piper shivering and Suzanne gave her a nasty look. “Go get shoes and a jacket on before you freeze to death and I get in trouble.” She said continuing towards the playhouse where the wood was stored. Piper turned back towards the house and went inside. She went to the stairs leading to her bedroom and grabbed her new boots off the stair. She slipped them on her feet over her rather large pants. She ran to the kitchen and opened the closet. She grabbed her spring coat from inside and went back outside. Suzanne had already carried a pile of wood to the side of the house. Piper found her behind the playhouse. Piper stepped on a large stick that Suzanne had dropped. She felt a weird sensation going through her head. She fell to the ground and grasped her head. Suzanne dropped the wood she had in her hand. “Piper.” Suzanne said asking it as more of a question. Piper’s head beat like someone was inside her playing the drums. All of a sudden the pressure stopped. She stood up and Suzanne backed away. “Hey, are you okay?” Suzanne asked. “Yea, I just felt really weird.” She said grabbing some wood from the stacked pile. “Hey watch out for that dead crow.” Suzanne said. Piper looked behind her and saw the dead bird. She gasped, thinking Digger could have hunted the bird down and killed it, but it was completely intact. “It must have died of natural causes.” Piper said. She started reaching for some wood but it was stuck. She grabbed another piece but that was stuck, too. “Hey what’s going on here? All the wood is stuck.” “That’s really weird.” Suzanne said trying to take out wood but it was also stuck. Piper went around the playhouse and went inside. She grabbed a crow bar from inside and brought it back out. She went out to the back and tried taking out the wood using the crowbar. The entire pile of wood fell to the ground. It was like it was all stuck together. It was a giant wall of wood. Suzanne fell backwards into the yard behind them. She fell over the fence and onto a board on the other side of the fence. Piper jumped out of the way towards the swing set. “Hey Suzanne, you okay?” Piper asked extending her hand to her sister. “I think I did something to my hand.” Suzanne said. She backed away and showed her hand to Piper. It had already started to turn shades of purple, black, and blue. “You’ll have to get it checked out. Just keep it still for now. That was so weird.” Piper said. “Sounds like something that wood happen in those cases your friends Scully and Mulder investigate.” Piper’s jaw dropped open as she looked at the playhouse. “You may be more right than you think.” She said pointing to the playhouse. Suzanne looked over and gasped. Chapter 2 11:28 PM “Max, I don’t know what to do.” Piper said through the phone. She was sitting on the edge of her bed in her room in the dark. She looked up at the ceiling and saw her glow and the dark letters and stars. “I can’t tell you what to do.” Max said. In her own home, she was sitting in her basement typing on a computer. “The police were all over my house. They searched everywhere. They took my stories as evidence. The files, the disks, everything.” Piper whined as tears sprung to her eyes. Her stories meant more to her than life itself. She had spent the last three years of her life writing the stories that were now taken from her. “Evidence of what?” Max asked. “They think I could be part of the murder of whatever that thing was. They said my stories were evidence that I’m a terrorist at heart or something crappy like that.” “What do you mean ‘that thing’?” Max wondered. She shifted to another position on her chair. It was late at night and she didn’t want her parents to know she was talking on the phone. “It wasn’t human. The police say it was but I know it wasn’t.” Piper paused. An uncomfortable silence filled the air. “What?” Max whispered. “Something happened before Suzanne and I found the body. I didn’t tell the police because I thought they would send me to the psyche ward. They would send me to the psyche ward.” “What is it, Piper?” Max asked needing to know what Piper was talking about. “I felt something really weird. A strange thing came over me. I fell to the ground and my head pounded. It was worse than a headache or a migraine. Something came from inside me but then it stopped.” Piper explained. “What are you going to do?” Max asked worried for her friend. She knew her family was about to fall apart. Piper’s favorite subject to write about, unexplained murders was happening to her. A story was turning into a reality. “I have no idea.” Piper thought about what Max said. Was there something she could do? Who could she contact? “Mulder and Scully.” “What?” Max asked a little worried. Piper had come up with weird things before but contacting special agents to investigate a murder in her own back yard was crazy. “Suzanne even said it before we found the body that the whole thing should be categorized as an X-File. Maybe I should call them. Oh...Max…look, I’ll call you tomorrow.” |
