                                                                                          Chapter 6
6:23 AM

Kyla walked slowly down the long street.  Except for a few passing cars, the roads were mainly deserted.  She liked walking alone, with no people around.  It gave her a sense of security and time alone, which she barely got between school and home.  The sun began to peak in the beautiful sky, shining rays of sunshine against her face.  It had been so long since she had felt so good and pure.  She wanted to never reach school and continue walking forever but she promised Piper she’s meet her there.
As she passed a restaurant, she felt something cold and liquidy hit the soles of her shoes.  She prayed that she didn’t step in dog poop but even if she did there wasn’t much she could do about it.  In her head, she hoped the squish was a puddle left over from recent rains.  She looked down and saw what was beneath her.  She realized it wasn’t a puddle after all.  A puddle of water wasn’t red.
Kyla opened her mouth to scream but nothing came out.  She looked to her right and followed the small trail of blood to a small fence.  She peered over it  and saw a woman lying face down on the ground.  A small piece of blue chalk was lying next to the body.  Kyla’s body told her to faint, her mouth told her to scream, her legs told her to run, and her brain told her to get help.  It took her a few seconds but when she regained her composure, she bounded into a run towards the school.
Meanwhile, Piper opened the back entrance to the school.  She made her way past the pay phone and through another set of doubled doors.  She stopped and looked out the large windows that faced towards the teacher’s parking lot.  She glanced around, looking for Kyla but didn’t see her.  Piper looked down at her watch, figured she had a few more minutes, and then continued forward towards her locker.
She stopped as she noticed a light that came from Ms. Winchell’s room.  Piper walked down the corridor and went inside Ms. Winchell’s room.  She scanned the room for any signs of her teacher but there were none.  Piper shrugged and dropped her backpack on a nearby desk.  She was about to turn and leave when something on the blackboard caught her attention.  There were two triangles drawn on the board but instead of being drawn in chalk, they were drawn in blood.
Piper backed up slowly, not taking her eyes off the bloody pictures.  She backed into one of the desks, causing it and her to fall over.  She quickly scrambled to her feet, not bothering to pick up the desk.  She bypassed the desk and walked out of the room.
As she made her way into the hallway, she began to run towards the front entrance of the school.  She barged through a first set of doors and turned her head to make sure no one was following her.  She stopped as she thought she heard a noise.  She turned completely around and stared into the vacated school.  She fell to the ground as something hit her from behind.  She quickly sat up and saw Kyla lying there next to her.
“Sorry, I didn’t see you.”  Piper apologized.
“Piper…I found something.”  Kyla gasped, exhausted from her run.
     “Me too.”  Piper responded.
“You go first.”  They said in unison.
Piper spoke up first.  “I found something in Ms. Winchell’s room.  Two triangles drawn on the board with blood.  Whoever did it must still be around.”
“Yea, you can say that again.”  Kyla commented softly.
     “What do you mean?”
“There’s another dead body, Piper.  I found her outside of Madison’s Restaurant.”  Kyla explained.
Piper’s eyes grew wide.  “How did you know about the other murders?!  I didn’t tell you and Hannah, Max, and Erin promised they wouldn’t tell!  How did you find out?”
“Piper, I do watch the news every once in a while.”
“What?”  The murders have been released to the press?  What the freeze?”
“Well, sorry to burst your bubble but we have more important things to worry about!  We have a dead body down the street and bloody triangles drawn on a black board!  Don’t you think we should tell someone before whoever is doing this comes back and kills us?”
“You’re right.”  Piper agreed.  Kyla stood up, thinking Piper would do the same.  Kyla brushed the dust and dirt from her pants as she stared at Piper.  Piper’s eyes were fixated on the bloody footprints that were all around her.  “What are those?”
“I stepped in the blood.  That’s how I found the body.”  Kyla answered.  She waited, hoping Piper would take some action.     “Well, aren’t you going to do something?!  Call Mulder and Scully?  Anything?”
“How did you know they were her investigating this?”  Piper shrieked, quickly getting to her feet.
“Piper it doesn’t matter!  Call them!”
     “They’re sleeping and…”
“I think in this particular situation it’s okay to wake them up.”  Kyla said.  Her voice was obviously agitated.  She was afraid but also annoyed.  Whoever was doing this was playing with them and she didn’t like games.
“They just got back from like a seven hour steak out…”
     “Piper!”
“Well, when they come and get cranky, I am totally blaming you.”  Piper said.  She walked through the doors to a pay phone.  She fished a quarter out of her pocket and put it into the phone.  She picked up the receiver and dialed her number.  She waited as the phone rang.  Her answering machine picked up on the fourth ring.  “It’s the answering machine.”  She said to Kyla.
“Well, leave a message.”  Kyla said before Piper was able to hang up the phone.
“And say what?  Kyla and I found a dead body…come rescue us?”
     “Just say something.”  Kyla begged.
Piper waited as her answering machine finished.  “Mulder?  Scully?  Are you there?  Please pick up if you can here me.  This is Piper.”  She paused for a few seconds.  “Look, I’m at school with Kyla.  She found another dead body.  I found something you guys might want to check out.  Please come here as soon as you can.”  She paused again.  “Pick up!”  She slammed the phone down.
“Well, now what do we do?”  Kyla asked.  Piper shrugged her shoulders signifying that she was just as clueless as Kyla.
“Maybe I should run back to my house and wake them up while you stay by the body so no one finds it by accident.”  Piper suggested.
“I am not going to stay by that body by myself!”
“Then you go to my house.”
“I can’t let you stay here by yourself, either.  Let’s face it we have to stick together.  Whoever is doing this is still out there and I will not let it take control over us.”
An idea suddenly came to Kyla.  “Call Erin.  Tell her to get to your house to wake up Mulder and Scully.  Tell her only what she has to know…that there’s a dead body.  Once she wakes up Mulder and Scully they’ll come down and all of us will look over this together.”  Piper nodded and picked up the phone again.
                                                                                       *     *     *     *
Erin hung up the phone, unsure of how to take the information that she had just received.  She had begged for Piper to give her more information but she wouldn’t.  Her instructions were to just get Mulder and Scully and bring them over to the school as soon as possible.  She quickly pulled her hair up into a somewhat sloppy ponytail as she ran out the door.  She wheeled her bicycle out of her backyard, put on her helmet, and started on her way to Piper’s house.  Her backpack banged against her back as she rode as fast as she could.
She reached Piper’s house and dropped her bike on the lawn.  She didn’t bother taking off her helmet but instead she dropped her backpack on the front steps.  She rang the doorbell once and then again as no one answered.  She pounded on the door, waited, and finally gave up on the subtle approach.  She bounded off the steps and to Piper’s garage.  She glanced down at her hand and punched in the numbers that Piper had given her over to the phone into the keypad.  The garage began to open slowly.  She ducked under it as soon as there was enough room for her to get through.
As Erin entered, she glanced around for the box that Piper told her would be around.  She spotted it next to the door, on top of an old coffee pot.  She lifted up the box and found a shiny key underneath.  She picked it up and opened the door.  Leaving the door open, she bounded through the house.  She ran to Piper’s parlor and to her stairs.  As she reached the top of the stairs she screamed, seeing the gun barrel that pointed out at her.
“Erin, what are you doing here?”  Scully asked sleepily.  She rubbed her eyes and lowered her gun.  She wore blue, silk pajamas with a loose white robe draped over her body.
     “Piper’s in trouble.”  Erin responded.
     “What?”  Scully gasped.
“Scully, what is it?”  Mulder asked, coming out of his own room.  He, too had a gun in his hand.  He looked at Erin strangely.
“What happened to Piper?”  Scully questioned, basically ignoring Mulder.
“I’m not sure, she wasn’t clear.  Something about her being at school and Kyla found a dead body and Piper found something else that you guys would be interested in.  She said she tried to call but you guys didn’t pick up.  She called me instead and asked me to come get you.  She needs your help.”
