Chapter 7 4:15 PM “So, who are we seeing first?” Doggett asked. Scully looked over at him from the driver’s seat. He laid the map out on his lap and he traced it with his fingers. “Piper said after we drop off Erin we should go talk to Candy. So, how do we get there?” Scully asked. They were at the end of Erin’s street unaware of which way to turn. Doggett traced the road with his fingers. “Turn left.” He said. Scully looked both ways and then turned the car right. “You go down here a little ways until you come to Triton Avenue where you take a right.” “Okay.” Scully said. She drove a bit slower, checking out the street names. “So tell me about this girl, Candy.” Doggett said. “Her name is Candace Kane…” Scully began. “Her name is Candace Kane? Anyone call her candy cane?” Doggett wondered. “Usually it’s just Candy but I’m sure someone’s called her that more than once in her life.” Scully responded. “I guess parents will do anything for people to recognize their kid’s names.” Scully gave him a look. “Anyway, there’s not much to know about her. She’s known Piper since first grade and they’ve been really good friends ever since. She’s intelligent like the rest of the group as well as being equally weird.” “Why does that word ‘weird’ scare me?” Doggett asked. “Turn up here.” He said. Scully turned the car and except for a few directions, they were silent for the rest of the drive. “I think this is it.” Scully said. She parked the car on the curb and got out. She walked up to the front door of the house and rang the doorbell. Doggett stood not far behind her. A few seconds later, a teenage girl answered the door. “Candy, hi. Remember me?” Scully said. “Of course. Agent Scully.” Candy answered. “Come on in.” Scully walked into the house with Doggett right behind her. They walked into a small, but nice living room. The TV was on and attached to a game boy. An older boy was sitting on the floor playing a video game. “Calib…go take a walk.” Candy said to the boy. “Make me.” He responded. “Please, just for a few minutes.” She begged. “Go visit Aden or something.” He looked up at her and then at Scully and Doggett. “Fine.” He said. He turned off his game and then the TV. “You owe me.” He said as he brushed past Candy. “Sorry, that was my brother.” Candy apologized. “Please, sit down.” Scully and Doggett sat down on a couch. Candy sat across from them. “Candy, this is my partner Special Agent John Doggett.” Scully said. Doggett outstretched his hand. Candy took it and they shook hands. At least she has more manners than Piper, he thought as he remembered the first time he met Piper. “Where’s Mulder?” Candy asked. “He couldn’t be here.” Scully answered. “Do you know why we’re here?” “You probably think I have something to do with the deaths of Piper’s parents.” Candy responded. Doggett was surprised that Candy knew what was going on but by the look on Scully’s face, she wasn’t. “When was the last time you saw or spoke to Piper?” Doggett questioned. “Well, the last time we saw each other was Friday after school. Our lockers are next to each other so we went to our lockers, said good-bye for the week, and then left. Then, she called me the night her mother died. I think she called all of us. She e-mailed me just before you guys arrived about her dad.” Candy explained. “I’m sorry, we have to ask.” Scully said. Candy nodded. “Where were you at around six o’clock yesterday evening?” “I was out with Cornelius Theodora.” Candy answered. “Who’s Cornelius Theodora?” Doggett asked trying not to laugh at the strange name. He directed the question more towards Scully than Candy. Scully shrugged her shoulders. “Cornelius is in a few of mine and Piper’s classes. We doubled dated with Maxine and her boy friend John.” Candy explained. “What time did the movie start?” Doggett implored. “Um…5:20, I think.” Candy replied. Scully thought of what to ask next. “Did you know Piper’s TV had been stolen the morning her mother died?” Scully asked. “She mentioned it in her e-mail but it wasn’t that big of a deal considering what she’s going through right now.” Candy said. “Where were you about two hours ago?” Scully wondered. “I was here with my brother, playing video games. We don’t usually spend that much quality time together but in the era of video games he always challenges me to a match.” Candy replied. “When do you think you’ll talk to or see Piper next?” Doggett interrogated. “We’ll probably talk later today on the Internet or maybe tomorrow. I most likely won’t see her until we go back to school on Monday.” Candy answered. “This is hard on her and her family. She can’t go out as much as she would like anymore.” “Do you guys usually go out on a regular basis?” Doggett questioned. “Not on a regular basis but we go out a lot. We’ll go to the mall or the movies or just to someone’s house to chill on a Friday or Saturday night.” Candy replied. “Do you have the number of this Cornelius Theodora so we can call him to confirm that you were out with him?” Scully asked. “Sure, just a sec.” Candy said. She stood up and disappeared down the hallway. She walked into her room and searched through her bureau. She grabbed a piece of paper and looked at the number. She jotted it down on another piece of paper and then walked out. She brought the original out to Scully who took it and pocketed it. “Thank you.” Scully said. “We should be going but we may need to talk to you later.” “We ask that you not leave the state without telling us.” Doggett added in. Scully smiled at Candy and then walked outside with Doggett. “How can you tell her not to leave the state?” Scully asked as soon as the door shut behind them. “That’s what you’re supposed to tell suspects.” Doggett responded. “She is not a suspect.” Scully reminded him as she opened the door to the car. “In this case, everyone’s a suspect.” Doggett said as the two of them got into the car. He reached over and buckled his seat belt as Scully started the car. “Now where are we headed?” He asked. “To Kyla Maxwell’s.” Scully informed him. “Anything I should know about her?” “There’s nothing unusual about her, if that’s what you want to know.” “I think there’s something unusual about all of these girls.” Doggett said. “Where does she live?” Scully looked down at the piece of paper Piper had given her. “34 Harmony Ave. The next question is how do I get there?” “I think we go back towards Piper’s.” Doggett said as he turned the map around. “I think I can handle that.” Scully said as she began to drive down the street. She made her way towards Piper’s house. “Now what?” She asked as she pulled up to the side of Piper’s house. “Now take a left.” He commanded. Scully continued down the road and did as told. After driving for a few minutes, they finally made it to Kyla’s house. They walked up to her door, knocked, and then waited. An older teenage girl answered the door. “We don’t want to buy anything.” She said as she began to close the door. “We’re not selling anything.” Scully said, putting her arm in the way of the door. “We’re looking for Kyla Maxwell. Are you her sister?” “Yea, just a minute.” She said. She closed the screen door and walked away. Kyla walked into the living room a few seconds later. She had a large smile on her face and her eyes sparkled with delight. Her smile soon turned into a frown when she looked at Doggett. “Where’s Mulder?” She asked, sounding disappointed. “He’s not here, Kyla. I’m sorry. I know how much you wanted to see him.” Scully said, smiling at Kyla. Doggett looked at Scully and then at Kyla. Must be a female thing, he thought. “What can I do for you guys?” Kyla asked through the screen. “Where were you yesterday night at around six o’clock?” Doggett asked, getting right to the chase. “I was eating dinner with my family.” Kyla responded. She paused. “Oh, see I get it. You think we all have something to do with the deaths of Piper’s parents.” “I’m assuming that means Piper e-mailed you or talked to you about this.” Scully said. “Piper e-mailed us all about what was happening. I just got her message. She said something about you guys coming but I didn’t really think you would.” Kyla informed them. “Did you think Piper lied to you about us?” Doggett asked. |
