CKO was the only AM outlet of the defunct CKO All-News Network, which bought the station in late 1977.  All of the other stations in the CKO network across the country were on FM.  Before CKO was bought by the network, it was licensed as CFOX.  CKO left the air at the same time the entire CKO network closed down for good, during the noon newscast (Eastern Time) on Nov. 10, 1989.  The problems leading to the closing of the network were due to poor ratings and a breakdown in the negotiations concerning the ongoing sale of the operation.  The network never returned to the air, and many of the original FM frequencies used by the CKO stations in major cities have since been awarded to other licensees.  The Montreal AM frequency used by CKO has never been reactivated.

CFRC
Kingston, Ontario
1490   .1  ND
ON AIR:  OCT  27  23
Although CFRC, with only 100 watts, is the least powerful station on this list, it is also one of the oldest.  Not only was CFRC one of the earliest radio stations in Canada, its sister station, CFRC-FM, was one of the earliest FM stations in Canada.  CFRC began operation in 1923 as 9BT, after which it was issued a commercial broadcast license.  Although owned by Queen's University, CFRC operated as a commercial radio station until Aug. 31, 1942 when CKWS Kingston signed on.  CFRC has been deleted, but CFRC-FM, which began operation as experimental station VE9BH on Apr. 3, 1944, remains active.  CFRC was Canada's first university-operated radio station.  Queen's University owned CFRC until 1981, at which time ownership changed to an independent body, Radio Queen's University.  CFRC-FM underwent the same ownership change in 1985.  The experimental license for VE9BH was renewed annually from 1944 until Mar. 31, 1953, at which time the station was issued an FM broadcast license with the call sign CFRC-FM.  CFRC-FM was a simulcast operation until January 1970, at which time programming was made independent of CFRC.  CFRC-FM operated at 91.9 with 1,270 watts from 1954 to 1990.  On Feb. 3, 1990, power was increased to to 3,000 watts, the frequency was changed to 101.9, and CFRC went dark.

CFYN
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
1050   10/2.5  DA-N
ON AIR:  OCT  25  34
Aug. 30, 1992 was a sad day in radio history for Sault Ste. Marie since the city lost both of its AM stations on that day.  CFYN and CKCY were owned by different companies, but the two owners persuaded the CRTC to allow them to close their AM stations because they could no longer compete in the market.  Both companies already had FM stations operating in the market, and the CBC had entered the market as well.  To make matters worse, there were four competing stations in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.  CFYN is survived by sister station CHAS-FM, at 100.5 with 14 KW.  CKCY is survived by sister station CJQM-FM, at 104.3 with 100 KW. Both FM stations have been operating since 1964.

Replaced by CHYR-FM, on air Jul. 23, 1993 at 96.7 with 21,200 watts.
CHYR was an unusual AM operation.  It began as a 250 watt directional daytime station on 710 in 1955.  Power increased in 1960 to 1 KW, still as a directional daytimer.  In Aug. 1967, daytime power was increased to 10 KW directional.  Night service began in 1968 with 250 watts directional, but on 730, while the daytime signal remained on 710.  The station call during the day on 710 remained CHYR, while the night call sign on 730 was CHIR.    Night power on 730 increased to 500 watts in 1974, and the call sign changed from CHIR to CHYR-7.  Night power on 730 increased to 1 KW in 1980.  Permission was granted on Feb. 11, 1993 for CHYR to move from 710 and 730 to 96.7 FM.  While the FM tower was being constructed at the AM site, all but one of the towers in the AM directional system had to be removed, so CHYR began to operate on 710 only during the day and night at reduced power.  Night operation on 730 ceased in March 1993.  CHYR-FM began tesing in early July, with full operation beginning Jul. 23, 1993.  CHYR ceased operation on 710 on Sep. 10, 1993.

When Telemedia Communications and Radiomutual merged their AM operations in Quebec on Sep. 30, 1994 because they could no longer afford to compete with other, they closed CJMS (Montréal),  CJRP (Québec),  CJMT (Chicoutimi),  CJRS (Sherbrooke),  CJTR (Trois-Rivières),  and CKCH (Hull).  (See other stations below).  All six stations left the air on this date and the licenses were turned in to the CRTC.  The merger produced a new company known as RadioMedia, but the two companies still run their FM stations separately.
NOTE:  CFMB (Montréal) operating at 10 KW on 1410 was permitted on Feb. 21, 1997 to move to 1280 with 50 KW, the same frequency and power as the former CJMS.  CFMB began testing on 1280 in Spring 1997, and moved there permanently in Sep. 1997.  A new transmitter site was built for the new 1280 operation.  The CJMS call sign is now in use on a new station at 1040 in St-Constant, just outside Montréal.

Although it might appear that CFQC converted to FM, in fact, it was CJWW (750) that was granted a conversion to FM by the CRTC.  The owner of CJWW bought CFQC (600) at the time of the conversion and swapped call signs between the stations, resulting in the new FM at 92.9 becoming CFQC-FM, while the former CFQC 600 frequency became CJWW. On Feb. 6, 1995, at 6 AM, CJWW replaced CFQC on 600, and simulcast on 750 until 12 noon.  At 7 AM, CFQC re-emerged as CFQC-FM at 92.9.
NOTE:  Within a year of CJWW vacating the 750 frequency, CJVR Melfort (Sask.) moved to 750 from 1420.

It is significant to note that CFCF held the first broadcasting license in Canada, orignally licensed as XWA, which stood for (E)X-perimental Wireless Apparatus.  The license was issued to The Marconi Wireless & Telegraph Company.  The Canadian Marconi Co. owned CFCF until 1972.  On Dec. 1, 1919, XWA conducted the first radio broadcast in the world.  The call sign XWA was changed to CFCF (Canada's First, Canada's Finest) on Nov. 4, 1920.  The CFCF call sign remained with the station until it was changed to CIQC on Sept. 19, 1991.

ON AIR:   JUL  19  22
CKCK closed operations at midnight on October 1, 2001.  This was part of of complicated sale arrangement between CKCK, CKRM, and CJME, along with the FM stations owned by CKCK and CKRM.  Essentially, CKRM bought CKCK and moved the CKRM signal from 980 to 620.  While the CKCK call sign was actually transferred to 980 st that time, the actual operations of CKCK came to a close.  The signal on 980 was simply a simulcast of the new CKRM operation on 620.  Meanwhile, CJME Regina on 1300 will acquire the 980 frequency and move their CJME operation from 1300 to 980.  The CJME call sign will move to 980 and the CKCK call sign will disappear.  To add to the complication, the original CJME station on 1300 has been granted a conversion to FM, so the 1300 frequency will go dark.

OFF AIR:
CKOT
Tillsonburg, Ontario
1510   10-D  DA
ON AIR:   APR 30  55
CKOT has been granted permission to move to FM, but a new frequency must be chosen by the applicant.  CKOT's application specified 104.7 with 2,300 watts, but it was decided that 104.7 would be best used by a new station in Woodstock to avoid interference with CHUM-FM on 104.5.  CKOT has six months from the approval date of 25 August 2005 to choose another frequency that will be acceptable to the CRTC and the Department of Industry.  CKOT already operates CKOT-FM on 101.3 with 50,000 watts.  CKOT-FM began operation Oct. 1, 1965.
NOTE:  CKOT applied to move to FM in 1999 when 102.3 was available in London.  CKSL London also applied to convert to FM using that frequency, but the CRTC awarded the frequency to the CHUM Group for a new station.  See the listing for CKSL in Section 3.

Section 3
The following section lists AM stations that have had applications to move to FM denied by the CRTC.  The AM stations are still in operation.

OFF AIR:   SEP   1  00
CJVI
Victoria, British Columbia
900  10  DA-1  Stereo
ON AIR:  APR   2  23
CJVI applied to move to 107.3, but their application was denied.  The 107.3 frequency was awarded to CFAX (1070) Victoria, but as an additional FM station, not as a replacement for CFAX.   In the decision to deny 107.3 to CJVI, it was noted that 89.9 will be available when hearings are held, so CJVI will undoubtedly apply for it.
NOTE:  Instead of applying for 89.9, CJVI arranged to swap frequencies with non-commercial CKMO-FM Victoria at 103.1.  Under the terms of the arrangement, CJVI-FM began operation on 103.1 with 9,400 watts on September 1, 2000.  At the same time, CKMO-FM left 103.1 and became CKMO on 900 with the former facilities of CJVI.  Rogers Broadcasting Limited, owner of CJVI, is leasing the AM transmitter facilities to CKMO for $1 per year for 10 years.  Rogers has a commitment to spend $400,000 over the 10 year period to operate and maintain the transmitter facilities on behalf of CKMO.  While CKMO-FM operated on 103.1 with only 50 watts, Rogers is authorized to operate CHTT-FM (the replacement for CJVI) on 103.1 with 9,400 watts.
OFF AIR:   N/A

CKSL
London, Ontario
1410   10  DA-2  Stereo
ON AIR:  JUN  21  56
CKSL has applied to move to 102.3 with 4.6 KW.  CKSL already operates CIQM-FM at 97.5 with 50 KW.  CIQM-FM began operation Jun. 1, 1986.
NOTE:  The application for CKSL to move to FM was denied Oct. 28, 1999.  The frequency was awarded to the CHUM Radio Group for construction of a new FM station.  CKSL will continue to operate.  Another applicant for this FM frequency was CKOT Tillsonburg, which already operates an FM station in that community.  The  CRTC felt that the CHUM Group offered the best proposed use of the frequency.

OFF AIR:   N/A
CJRC
Gatineau, Québec (Ottawa, Ontario)
1150   50/5  DA-2
ON AIR:   JUN   3  68
CJRC applied to move to 89.9 with 65,000 watts.  A simulcast period of three months was requested.  There were several competing applicants, none of which operated stations in the Ottawa market.  The CRTC denied the application of CJRC and awarded the frequency to NewCap.

OFF AIR:   N/A
CKST
Vancouver, British Columbia
1040   50  DA-2   Stereo
ON AIR:   SEP  12  86
CKST applied to move to 94.5 with 38,000 watts.  The CRTC received the application on Jul. 28, 1992, but denied the application on Feb. 23, 1993.  The application was made only about four months after CKST moved from their original frequency of 800 in Langley with 25 KW to the more powerful 1040 frequency of the former CIMA Vancouver with 50 KW.  (CIMA began operation in 1986 as CIOF, and was later CKXY until finally changing to CIMA.)  CKST bought the facilities of CIMA in a sale approved by the CRTC on Jan. 30, 1992.  CIMA went off the air on Feb. 4, 1992, and then returned to the air on Mar. 9, 1992 as CKST, at which time the former CKST 800 in Langley was deleted.

OFF AIR:   N/A
CHOR
Summerland, British Columbia
1450   1  ND
ON AIR:            72
CHOR applied to move to 94.5 with 5000 watts.  The CRTC received the application on December 23, 2003, but denied the application on April 23, 2004.  The reason for the denial was that the increased coverage area proposed for the FM service would have increased the population served by it by 489% over the current AM service.  The CRTC concluded that any FM station designed to replace CHOR should have a coverage area that more closely duplicates the current CHOR signal.
CHOR made a second application to move to 98.5 with 250 watts in 2004, but it was denied by the CRTC on August 3, 2005 for the same reason as the first application.  Although the amount of power specified in the second application was substantially less than in the first application, the CRTC reaffirmed its original decision that an FM designed to replace CHOR should have a coverage area that more closely duplicates the current CHOR signal.

Section 4
The following section lists AM stations that have gone dark, but have since returned to the air on the same frequency.

OFF AIR:  DEC   1  93

ON AIR:  MAY   1  22
