Reflection-Jewish
The first group of Jewish that came to
United States was for religious freedom. The Jewish were ruled and controlled
by Brazil and they were intolerance for other religion. In this case it’s the
Jewish’s religion. The Jewish were settled at New Amsterdam, which was re-named
New York.
This is related to
what we have learned because we have learned that Jewish immigration came in
three waves. And one reason they came was because of religious freedom because
at their country they weren’t allowed to practice their own religion because
they weren’t ruled by their own country, they were ruled by Brazil. Jews also
came for economic opportunities because they didn’t have offered many jobs at
their country. And another group came for socializing. They didn’t’ have much
purpose for coming to America. They just came because they wanted to.
Instead of building
their own temples, the German Jews simply joined the much larger group of
Sephardic Jews. At first, the Sephardic Jews looked down upon the Ashkenazics,
and they didn’t’ even allowed sons and daughters to get married in to Sephardic
families. Soon, Sephardic started to accept the Ashkenazic Jews and accepted
marriage between the two sects.
We have learned today
that Jews are religious and studied in temples but I didn’t learn that they
shared with other family members. I thought when they studied in temples. It
was just like the regular kind of temples now…everyone is in a group mixed
together. Also I learned form reading this article that Sephardic Jews didn’t
allowed marriage between Ashkenazic but soon they were accepted. The Sephardic
wasn’t against them as much. They also started to accept the way they were.
Sephardic persecuted the Ashkenazic Jews,
but all Jews living in the American colonies experienced persecution by the
Christians. Anti-Jewish sentiment never was strong in the United States,
especially compared to that of Europe. Many came to in search of a better life,
while in Europe they were always seen as the single minority. In the US
society, the Jews were accepted.
Today in class, I
thought that Jews weren’t accepted by many of the Americans but by reading this
article I now know that Jews were accepted. Or was I just confused? I know that
that many came in search for a better life and many had immigrated to United
Stated because of persecution. But overall, emigrating from one place to
another is hard and the Jews only wanted to come here for their own religion,
economic opportunities and “socializing.”
