Building Your Own Web Page {KISS Style} |

Home | ||||||
The thought of building a personalized web page may, at first glance, seem overwhelming. However, with the right tools and a hint of creativity, you will be off in no time. The following are some Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) steps to leaving your mark on the World Wide Web. 1. Determine what your web page will be used for. 2. Select an Internet provider to host your web page. There are a number of free sites on the Internet. Sample sites include Netfirms (www.netfirms.com) and Geocities (http://geocities.yahoo.com/home). 3. I recommend Geocities. It offers 15 megabytes worth of storage and is very similar building a slide presentation in PowerPoint. It uses “drag and drop” features, which prevents you from having to write in HTML script. If you already use Yahoo as your email service provider, then you are one step ahead of the game. Geocities uses the same login name and password as your Yahoo email account. 4. Determine what you want your web page to look like and draw it out on scratch paper. Using scratch paper allows you to organize your thoughts before you begin working online. Once you have decided what you want your page(s) to look like, you can start building them in Geocities, Word, PowerPoint, or Excel. 5. Go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/home and enter your Yahoo ID and password. Under Build My Web Site select Yahoo! Pagebuilder. On the next page, click on Launch Pagebuilder. 6. Geocities will open with the start or index page. It is easiest to start by clicking on File, then File Manager. File manager allows you to upload all the pictures and files you want to use to put together your page. There are some limitations to what you can upload. For example, .bmp pictures cannot be uploaded. 7. After the files have been uploaded, click on Format, then Background. Clicking on Parent Directory pulls preformatted backgrounds to use. Clicking on User Files pulls down the files you uploaded so that you can use your own picture or file as a background. 8. At the top of the page are a number of quick, easy to use buttons to put the page together. The Add-ons button consolidates the functions and makes them easy to select. Click on the Add-ons button and look around. 9. You can select a number of options to personalize your page. Once you select something, it will appear on your template and you can move is around as you see fit. Begin putting your web page together. 10. You limited by what can be cut and pasted from other Microsoft programs. To cut and paste text in a text box, click on the Text button to open a new text box (be that you have already copied from your other file what you want to paste). Then click on the clipboard icon at the top of the page. When the clipboard opens, you must use the shortcut Control V to paste the text. You will only see one sentence in the clipboard window, but it will all be there. Click the Paste button and the information will be in the text box. 99% of the time, the format will changed and you need to rearrange it. Certain characters, such as apostrophes and quotations will have changed to symbols so they must be corrected. 11. When using files from Word, PowerPoint, or excel, they must be save in an html format. After they have been uploaded, you click the Open button to open then as new pages. 99% of the time, the format will have changed so the page needs to be edited according to the Geocities requirements. 12. Remember to save your web page to prevent losing your work. To add a link, select the textbox or picture you want to link, and then click the Link button. Click the down arrow to select what you want to link and then enter the address in the blank space. 13. You must preview your web page before you can test links. Periodically previewing your page will also allow you to check font size, spelling, picture location, and spacing. 14. You can make the web page wider and longer by clicking Format and then Page Properties. Enter the page specification you prefer. 15. You can add, link, and create as many pages as you want. You must, however, save them as different names to prevent from losing your work. 16. I think you handle the rest from here. Remember, “Practice Makes Better” so have a great time building your web page. I look forward to stopping by sometime. |
