Majick: Most Pagans use some form of magick. (You will often see it spelled with a "k" to differentiate it from the slight of hand, illisionist kind of magic.) The concept of magick is probably one of the most misunderstood aspects of the Craft. First of all, magick is neither white nor black. It is like fire: Fire can be used to cauterize wounds, heat homes and cook food. It can also be used to cause harm and torture, and to destroy things like homes. Magick is the same; it is a force that depends on the user. Magick is simply using the will to create change in the world. Secondly, we never do spells to influence people, like making certain people fall in love with us, nor do we put curses or hexes on people. There is a law that we follow called the Three-fold Law. It simply states that what you put out into the world returns to us three fold. So, if we were to curse or coerce someone, it will backlash onto us 3 times worse. (This is usually enough to discourage this type of behavior.) This is the most basic description of paganism. There are as many varities out there as there are practitioners. And while we are not a religion that prosteletizes, I do welcome any questions that you may have. And as we say:
Our philosophy: The term pagan describes any pre-Christian nature-based religion of the west. It is a faith and a way of life that recognizes duality and balance (ie: between male and female, light and dark, good and evil.) We are in touch with the forces of nature, and of the world around us. Pagans give honor to many Gods and Goddesses, while realizing that They are the many faces of a great Force that lies behind everything. We do not worship the devil - as is portrayed in many b-movies and most stereotypes. Pagans generally do not believe in the existence of an arch-evil being, nor do we believe in a Christian type hell. Pagans generally believe in reincarnation. We feel that our purpose here is to learn and experience certain things, and that when we die, we simply go to a resting place. Once we have rested and integrated all the lessons just learned, we return in a new life to experience a new set of lessons and events. There are many different types, or traditions, in paganism. Druids, Wiccans (or more commonly known as witches), and Shamans are just a few types. Even within a group, there are a multitude of types. Wiccans can come from any region/ethnic group, such as Norse Pagans, Saxons, Native American, or Celtic (Gaulish or Brythonic.)
This is a very basic page to answer questions people may have about paganism. It includes brief descriptions about our beliefs, our holidays, magick, and links.
The Wheel of the Year. Click on a circle to view a description of that holiday.
Our holidays: Pagans have special holy-days (the origin of the word holiday) that we celebrate. There are eight holidays, called Sabbats. They are divided into the Lesser and Greater Sabbats: Lesser: Being an Earth and Nature- oriented religion, we celebrate the special times that mark the changes of the seasons. These are: Winter Solstice - Dec 20 - 22 Spring Equinox - March 20-22 Summer Solstice - June 20 - 22 Fall Equinox - Sept 20 - 22 The actual dates change, depending on when how the Sun moves. Major: These are the most powerful times of the year, when the Ancients knew that there was something special in the air. These are: Samhain - October 31 (Yes, thats Halloween!) Imbolc / Oestara - February 1 Beltane - May 1 Lughnasadh - August 1 See the Wheel of the Year below for specific definitions for each holiday. We also celebrate the Full and New Moons, seeing them as slightly lesser holidays, called Esbats. For most of us, we see the moon as the Goddess, and each phase or face means something special.
