KIRKWOOD RALLIES FOR TIE

By Nathan Young

|MID-STATES HOCKEY| With its back against the wall going into the third
period, Kirwkood came out swinging. The Pioneers scored
a pair of third period goals to salvage a 3-3 tie
against Marquette on Tuesday night at Queeny Park. Late
in the third period, Kirkwood's Keith Ortlip slid a shot
past Mustangs goaltender Andrew Moss that stopped inches
in front of the crease. Kelsey Johnston swooped in and poked
the puck into the net for his second goal of the game,
tying the score with 2:35 remaining. The goal came moments
after Marquette killed two penalties in a four-minute span
in which Kirkwood (8-2-3, 19 points) managed a total of 1 shot.
Pat McElroy put the Pioneers in position to tie it earlier
in the third when he scored on a breakaway. Ben Peterson
sent a pass out of the defensive zone to a streaking
McElroy past the red line. McElroy skated down the middle
and deked Moss for the goal. "That was the best all-around
team we've played so far," said Marquette coach and former
St. Louis Blue Rick Zombo. "They made us work from the
beginning to the end." Marquette (11-3-1, 23 points)
rebounded from Johnston's first goal with three goals in less
than seven minutes to close out the 2nd period. Time Huber
scored 2 of those, with the first coming on a shot from the
high slot off a Paul Miller pass. Sean Muncy's power play goal
at 10:15 of the 2nd period was sandwiched between Huber's.
Marquette outshot the Pioneers 11-9 in the period.
Kirkwood goaltender Andrew Ellis kept his team in teh game
despite the rough 2nd period. Ellis stopped 22 of the 25
shots he faced, including all six in the third period
as his teammates battled back. He made several tough
saves in each period, but none was bigger than one on
Travis Turnbull in the second. Turnbull skated past the
the blue line and took a slapshot to the top right corner.
Ellis made a big glove save to keep it a one-goal game
for the moment. "I played pretty good, "Ellis said. "I had
to come back strong after that second period."

Pioneers head coach Greg Griffin had mixed feelings after
that game. "We didn't feel we played the way we're
capable of, "Griffin said. "To come back and get a point
out of it is a lot better than a loss."
Marquette outshot Kirkwood 25-20 for the game, including
19-14 through two period.
