Out
of all the fires that could placed upon someone, this might
be the most agonizing, and also the most prolonged. After the
victim is bound to the stake, rather than surrounding them with
timbers to be burned, there are piles of hot coals placed at
their
feet. These are constantly replenished so as never to allow
a break from the intense heat which they throw forth.
Instead of incinerating the whole of the body as a burning usually
woruld, the hot coals cause a slow cooking of the flesh. As
the
outer skin is seared away, the more sensitive tissues underneath
are exposed to the heat, and they too are baked to the point
of
ash. Eventually, all that remains is bone. Making this an even
more enduring process is the fact that the pile of coals is
only
gradually built. This results in the victim being alive as they
witness their feet, then legs, and finally torso fall victim
to the
embers.
