Irish intervarsities Valentia 2001 |
After a last minute decision we hit the road for a 300km trip. Arriving at 2a.m. at the pub there was just enough time to get the last order in. A quick pint and off to bed. |
Saturday morning provided excellent conditions. The force5/6 wind allowed the gold fleet to complete 3 figure of 8 slalom races. The first 3 races were extremely competitive with the varying breeze. Daniel Hanberry (UCG), Daniel Macauly (UCC) and Fintan Day (DIT) took the honours in the first 3 races. The silver fleet took to the water during lunch and completed several races. After lunch it was time for the gold fleet to do their stuff. The fleet decided to do a downwind (4-Buoy) slalom. 4 races were completed. With the wind increasing the winner was decided on board speed {once one was able to gibe}. Fintan Day, Daniel Hanberry and Danny Mulryan dominated these races. |

An excellent meal was had by all on Saturday night. Then it was time for the draw. Prizes varied from puppets to a Yes Sail. The sail went to Fintan Day. Sunday failed to impress, although the silver fleet completed 2/3 races while the novice fleet entertained the crowd within the harbour. Galway took victory in the intervarsities for the first time. Excellent racing was had by all. Congrats to the organisers for such an enjoyable event. |
