Changing Places
PART 40

The Valenti house became the nerve center of the groups’ search for Liz in the hours following her disappearance. Isabel called her parents and covered for her and Liz, saying that the gang was all going camping to celebrate the end of the school year. Alex, Maria and Max did the same thing with their parents. The search was not going as fast as they thought it would as evening descended and moved on into night.

They told both Tess and the Sheriff an abbreviated version of the alien’s story. The two were astounded by what they were told. Valenti felt appalled that he had been a part of the people who were hunting the teens. He knew then that he had been on the wrong side and told them he’d be there whenever they’d need him in the attempt to make up for all the attention he brought on them. The Sheriff called his contact at the FBI but they were unwilling to give him any information. He tried a few other avenues that he had but still came up with nothing. Michael decided there might be another way to find out the information they need so he snuck off.

Kyle barely had the door open before he felt himself slammed against the entryway wall and saw a very upset Michael in front of him. “You told us that the two of you have been running from the FBI forever. I want to know everything about it. People, places, everything. And then you’re going to tell me where our protector is because he needs to do his job.”

“What are you talking about?” Kyle gasped out.

“Those bastards have Liz.” Michael growled out.

Kyle’s eyes bugged out before he said; “I don’t know where Ed is. He was gone when I got home.”

“It’s almost dawn, when’s he coming back?” Michael asked frustrated.

“I don’t know. Sometimes he leaves for days at a time.” Kyle informed him. “But I know some of what you want to know. I’ve scanned a lot of the documents he’s found.”

“Scanned?” Michael asked.

“We have the ability to look at something, a piece of paper or a computer screen, and scan all the information into our brains.” Kyle informed him.

Michael shook his head and grabbed the collar of Kyle’s shirt. “Then come on, you’re coming with me and spilling your guts. We might be able to figure out where they’ve taken her.”

Michael drug Kyle out to his own SUV and Michael directed him to drive to the Valenti house. When they arrived, Isabel balled Michael out for leaving without telling her where he was going. He apologized and told her that he hadn’t meant to worry her. Maria was the one to ask about Kyle, so Michael answered her. “He’s here to help, he knows what we’re up against.”

Everyone looked at Kyle expectantly to begin. He wasn’t exactly happy to have the humans involved but started anyway. “There is a small group of agents, buried deep in the FBI whose sole assignment is to hunt for aliens. Their existence is kept secret even from other units in the bureau. The only people who know about the unit aside from its members are it’s targets, us. They captured Ed as well as the other protector who survived the crash in 47 but he managed to escape. But it took him a few years. From him they learned a lot about us, everything about our powers and our weaknesses. That’s why they took Liz, to conduct experiments on her. Her healing Max led them straight to her, just like it did Ed and I.”

“How many agents are there?” Michael asked.

“About a dozen agents, but they have doctors and technicians too. About half a dozen of them.” Kyle answered. “They’re led by a female agent by the name of Danielle Pierce.”

Everyone’s eyes widened in shock and Michael started cursing. “Son of a bitch.”

“She was right there, she talked to me and Liz both.” Isabel exclaimed. “We knew there was something about her, but we just couldn’t figure it out.”

“Well we know now.” Michael said. “What can you tell us about her?”

Kyle shrugged his shoulders. “Not much. She’s ruthless in her job, she does nothing but work. It’s like she has some kind of personal interest in it. She lives for nothing else but to hunt us down. According to Ed, she’s gotten the closest to us than any of the other unit leaders.”

“So where is this protector of ours?” Isabel demanded.

“Shouldn’t he be here doing, oh I don’t know, protecting?” Maria asked.

Kyle threw her an annoyed look before saying, “Like I was telling Michael, I don’t know where he is. He’s left before when they got close to finding us and led them away.”

“So basically we’re on our own.” Michael stated. “Not that we have any choice.”

Isabel suddenly got an idea that might help. “What if I try to dream walk Liz? I could talk to her dream self and maybe find out where she is.”

“What’s dreamwalking?” The Sheriff asked.

“I can get into people’s heads when they’re sleeping and see their dreams.” Isabel explained.

“You won’t know if it’ll work unless you try.” Alex said and the others agreed.

“Okay, I just need a quiet place and a picture of Liz.” Isabel explained. Max quickly pulled out his wallet and handed her a picture of the two of them. Isabel studied the picture for a minute, the two of them looked so happy as they smiled at each other before she let Alex lead her into one of the bedrooms.

Alex sat first on the bed and spread out so Isabel could lie on him comfortably. He gave her a small kiss before she settled in and touched Liz on the picture. She closed her eyes and pushed out with her energy to locate her sister.

Isabel could tell that her power was working but it was different than other times. The dreamwalk felt different. She looked around and saw that she was in a small room that was completely white. The only color in the whole room came from an unconscious figure lying limply on an exam table. It was Liz.

Isabel almost shrieked at the state of her sister. She was strapped to the table by her waist, wrists, and ankles. She could see that something had been done to her, that they had started experimenting on her. There were red circles on her forehead that stood out harshly against her pale skin, skin that was usually a lot healthier and darker. Isabel had seen enough horror and mad scientists movies to have a good idea where the red circles had come from. She reached out to touch her but her fingers passed right through her sister’s form.

As she stood there trying to figure out what was going on with her powers, the wall behind her opened up and some people walked in. Only one of them looked familiar and Isabel felt a lump come up in her throat, it was Ms. Pierce. With two men following her, Ms. Pierce approached the table Liz was on and seemed to evaluate her. “Why hasn’t she woken up yet? It’s been hours since she passed out.”

“The magnitude of electricity that her body absorbed was a substantial amount. I’m surprised she’s still breathing.” One of the men informed them. “But all of our readings indicate that she should be in good health, we’re just not sure how long it will be until she regains consciousness.”

“I’m not willingly to wait for nature to run its course. Luckily I have ways to wake her.” Ms. Pierce said irritated. She turned to the second man and nodded. The man disappeared back through the door but quickly reappeared with two more men who were carrying what looked like a large tub of water and ice. Isabel was confused about what was going on until she saw that they were unstrapping Liz. She tried to step in front of them as they carried her limp body towards the tub but they only passed through her. She watched in horror as the two men dunked Liz into the tub.

“No!” Isabel jolted awake and sat up, the first thing she noticed was she was no longer in the white room but back in Alex’s arms with the others watching. Michael anxiously asked, “Did you find out anything? Where is she? What happened?”

“Michael give her a minute.” Alex chastised just as Isabel said. “Ms. Pierce has her. I saw Liz, she doesn’t look good. They’ve been hurting her. I lost the connection before I could find out where they were.”

“You might have seen something helpful.” Kyle stated. “What did the room they had her in look like?”

“It was all white.” Isabel started to explain. She gave the few other details she could think of. When she was done she saw Kyle nodded. “I think I know where they have her. It sounds like the place they had Ed at when they captured him after the crash. It’s not far.”

PART 41

Instead of like last time when Liz gradually climbed out of unconsciousness, this time she was jerked awake by the sensation of a thousand icicles against her skin. Her eyes burst open but all she could see was that she was under water before she was pulled out of it. She could barely take a breath before she felt herself dunked into the freezing water again. They held her there for a minute before pulling her up again. “STOP!”

Surprisingly they did stop the torture. Two men carried her frozen body back to the table she had previously been laid on and strapped her down once again. But this time she had no strength to fight back. While she lay there, two other men took the ice bath a way just as Pierce came around to look at her yet again. “I’m hoping that you now have a greater understanding of how determined I am to find the answers I’m looking for and how far I am to get them.”

“I told you.” Liz said weakly as her teeth chattered. She was freezing but the others made no effort to help her. “I don’t know anything. I can’t tell you anything.”

Pierce listened to Liz’s answer and shook her head as if disappointed. “It looks like you are going to need some more convincing to talk.”

She snapped her fingers and the two men came forward again. One of them reached forward and started to pull on her shirt, Liz figured out what he was doing and started to resist but the man was able to pull her tanktop out of the way, exposing her breasts to them. Liz felt nauseous and mortified at being so exposed. But she quickly pushed those thoughts away when she noticed the other man coming towards with a scalpel. “No! NO!”

Liz howled in pain as the scalpel made it’s first cut just above her breasts. The pressure and pain seemed to increase as the man cut her. He stopped after a few inches, resting just in the middle of her chest but kept the blade in place. Liz looked at Pierce with hateful eyes. “And people fear us. You’re a monster!”

“I’m a monster?” Pierce asked. “I’m not the one who kills people by melting them from the inside out. Who kills people who stand in your way. Now tell me where the other aliens are, I know there are more of you. I know that you’ve had contact with the ones that escaped!”

“I don’t…”

“I know there are more of you!” Pierce screamed at her practically breaking Liz’s eardrums by the shear volume. “Now tell me where the alien is who killed my grandfather!”

Things started clicking into place for Liz and she knew what Pierce wanted. When she didn’t answer, Pierce enlightened her even more. “My grandfather was one of the men who started this unit back in 1947 and was one of the first ones at the crash site. He was a young man at the time but he was ambitious. He continued his work until 1970. He was seen leaving the units base of operations and then disappeared. His body was found two days later, wearing only a silver handprint. Just like the one you gave Max Parker when you healed him.”

“I’m sorry…”

“I don’t want your sympathy! I want you and your kind to die!” Pierce screamed. She looked as if she was about to strike her but instead turned to the doctor and snapped her fingers, signaling for him to continue his cutting. “Open her up, maybe then she’ll be a little more willingly.”

The surgeon did as he was told and resumed cutting Liz. He was just above her stomach when Liz heard Pierce whisper in her ear. “You know, the next part of our plan is to bring Max in here. Our scientists are just dying to see what effects your healing has had on him, it’s only a matter of time before he’s brought in and dissected.”

“NO!” Liz screamed out in anger. They paid no notice to the scream until something completely surprising to everyone in the room happened.

As if hit by the force of a shock wave, Pierce and the doctors in the room were thrown away from Liz and into the walls behind them. The sound of them hit the walls reverberated through the room and Pierce looked at Liz with complete shock and alarm before yelling. “Evaluate! Everyone out now!”

The two men scrambled up from their spots and disappeared through the door with Pierce quickly following them. As she left she just continued to stare in astonishment at Liz.

Once they were gone, Liz tried to figure out what had happened. It was obvious that she had used her powers but how was that possible? Pierce had told her that the drugs they gave her numbed the part of her brain that she accessed to use her powers. She knew it was true, she had felt their absence ever since she had first woken up here.

As she thought about it, Liz looked down and saw that one of her restraints had been torn open. One of the men must have been holding it when they had been flung away. She quickly pulled her hand out of its remains and freed her other hand. With her newly untied hands, she pulled her shirt back over to cover herself and then worked on her feet. It hurt to lean over because of the large incision on her chest but she managed.

She shakily got off of the table and made her way over to the cart of medical supplies that had been abandoned in the others haste to get away from her. She looked over its contents. There was no change of clothes to replace the still cold and wet clothes she was wearing but there were supplies to clean up her wound. She did so quickly, not sure if the doctors and Pierce would arrive again at any minute, and moved over to the examine table. She stripped it of the two thin sheets on it and wrapped them around herself in the effort to gain some warmth.

She huddled in a corner, the farthest one from the door and again resumed her thoughts on how she had accessed her powers. They had only appeared when she had been feeling extreme hatred and anger at Pierce not to mention fear for Max. Could it be somehow connected to Max? The group knew less about the connection between him and her than they did anything else so it could be possible.

If what she was thinking was true, then it explained how the blocker they administered to her had been ineffective. They were trying to control her mind power when her heart fueled Max and her connection. They didn’t have a blocker for that.

As she sat there thinking she realized that no one would probably be coming in to bother her for some time. Her display of powers had thrown them for a loop and they wouldn’t reenter until they knew it was safe. Hopefully by then she could figure a way out or someone would come after her.

(*(*(*(*(*(*(*(**)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)

In the observation room that peered into Liz’s cell, Danielle Pierce voiced her frustrations and aggravation. “What the hell happened in there? How was she able to use her powers? I thought you incompetent fools said she had enough of the suppression drug to last for hours.”

“She did. After the electro treatment we injected her again and she should have been inactive for another twelve hours. We don’t know what happened.” The technician informed her with a shaky voice.

Danielle looked through the one-way mirror and watched as Liz freed herself from the gurney. She was proving to be more difficult than Danielle had originally thought. She knew that the alien girl would be difficult to break but that wasn’t what was surprising, it was this new display of powers. According to all of the documentation she had read about the other test subject the unit had detained back in the forties, the alien that her grandfather had studied himself, and the drug should have worked flawlessly. But for some reason it wasn’t.

Danielle was six years old when her grandfather had died. She had been close to him despite the long hours he worked and had been extremely saddened when he died. But it wasn’t until she graduated college and one of his friends who worked with him on at the unit had told her how he really had died. That was when she first became determined to find the alien responsible. She knew it was one of the two they had captured at the crash site. She had worked her ass off when she entered the bureau and it wasn’t long before she was accepted into the unit. They had had many leads over the years and had gotten close but it wasn’t until they received the news about the shooting in Roswell at the Crashdown Café that she knew that she was going to get her revenge.

She had insisted on doing the undercover research herself, unable to have faith in her men to do the job she wanted. That and she wanted to study the subject up close. She had to give the aliens credit, they were able to blend into their surroundings so well that if she didn’t have insider information, she never would have known that the being calling herself Liz Evans was indeed a life form from another planet. She was pulled out of her contemplation by the voice of the technician.

“What do you want us to do?”

“Nothing for now. We’ll give her a few hours to think over what has happened and how badly she wants to leave.” Pierce informed him.

The technician looked at her with surprise, “You intend to release her once we’ve acquired the information you’re requesting?”

Pierce shook her head, “No, but she doesn’t know that. As far as I’m concerned, her trip onto this base was one way.”

PART 42

Max, Michael, Isabel, Alex, Kyle, Maria, and Valenti were all gathered outside of the base they were positive that Liz was being held at. It was supposed to be empty but there was a lot of activity going on for it to be abandoned. The sun was already up when they had first arrived to look it over. It was only Valenti’s reasoning that it would be better to wait until nightfall before entering that stopped them from barging in.

The plan was for Valenti to cover them while Michael, Isabel, and Kyle went in after Liz. It was only the fact that the three had abilities greater than his own that Valenti even considered letting the three teenagers go inside. Max, and Alex were sitting in the cars waiting along with Maria to drive away when they reemerged.

“How do you plan on getting us in there without being seen?” Michael asked. “They’ve got to have a thousand cameras surveying the place.”

Kyle smirked, “It’s part of my powers. I can produce a shield that instead of just protecting me, it also conceals me. I actually become invisible.”

Michael and Isabel stared at him in shock. They had never encountered a power like that but they recovered quickly. Kyle activated his shield, instead of forming just a wall like Michael’s had, it formed a bubble around them and the three crept into the facility. They had just entered the main corridor and was approaching what looked like a security checkpoint when Michael noticed that there was an agent standing there looking straight at them. “He can see us.”

“No, it’s impossible.” Kyle stated. “Unless…”

“Unless what?” Isabel asked.

“There’s only one person who can see us…” Kyle started to say but was cut off when Michael drug them into a nearby room. The agent followed them and Michael raised his hand in defense but Kyle stopped him. “It’s Ed. He’s the only one who could detect my shield.”

“He’s right Michael.” The agent stated before there was a blinding light and the agent’s face melted into another one. Michael and Isabel recognized him from the footage they had seen from the camera planted in Kyle’s room.

Michael and Isabel weren’t sure how to react, they had been looking for others like them for so long but now, they weren’t sure if that was a good idea. After all this was probably the alien that had killed the man in the picture. They stared at him as he spoke. “What do the three of you think you’re doing here?

“They have Liz, we couldn’t just leave her here.” Michael stated. “And you weren’t anywhere around to help so we came by ourselves.”

“I have the situation under controlled.” Ed said impersonally.

“If you have everything handled then why has Liz been here for so long?” Isabel asked angrily. “She’s been here for over a day and you haven’t gotten her out yet.”

“Because if I went rushing in there now, I would be captured as well and of no help.” Ed retorted. “Since the three of you are here, you can help me. Come on.”

Ed led them out of the room but instead of going to the checkpoint, he led them down another corridor. They seemed to walk forever but didn’t run into anyone. He pulled them into what looked like an abandoned office. “This wall connects to another room that once you get inside its attached to a corridor that will take us to the room that Liz is being held.”

“How are we going to get through the wall?” Isabel asked.

“You do know how to manipulate?” Ed said snidely. Isabel shook her head. “That is how we are going to get through. When we enter the corridor, Kyle will trigger his shield and we’ll get into Liz’s cell undetected. The three of you will get her out while I bring up the rear. Now let’s move.”

Ed raised his hand to the wall and it started to glow, the other three replicated what he was doing and it didn’t take long before there was a hole big enough to give them access. They followed Ed’s plan until they were almost to the corridor. Then the door opened unexpectedly and an agent entered. He looked at them surprised for a minute before reaching to pull out his gun. But Ed was faster. He raised his hand, sending a blinding light aimed at the agent. It hit him square in the chest and sent him flying backwards. When his body hit the floor, it fell in way that made it obvious there was no life left in the agent’s body. Isabel let out a half scream of surprise before she stifled it. Michael stared in shock. “Why did you kill him? We could have restrained him so he couldn’t alert the others.”

Ed studied him for a minute, “My how much you’ve changed. It used to be you wouldn’t bat an eye at killing the enemy. Hopefully that will change before you get yourself killed.”

“What are you talking about before?” Michael asked completely confused.

“Later. Now once we’re inside Liz’s cell and cover her with Kyle’s shield we’ll only have about thirty seconds before they react to her disappearing.” Ed instructed. He switched back into the form of the agent he’d been impersonating earlier before looking at Kyle. “Now.”

Kyle nodded and brought up his shield. The four of them quietly slipped out into the hallway and approached a door. Ed nodded to Isabel who used her powers to disengage the lock and it slid open. They braced themselves to run into people inside but only saw Liz’s huddled form in the corner looking worse than the last time Isabel had seen her. They moved together towards her, and Kyle extended his shield to surround her.

Liz’s head popped up when suddenly Isabel, Kyle, Michael, and the man she knew was their protector appeared in front of her. “How…”

“No time Liz, we have to get you out of here.” Michael said. It shook him to see Liz in the condition she was in, so weak and fragile looking that he didn’t even wait to see if she could walk before he scooped her up in his arms. He looked over at Ed to see what was next.

“The three of you go now.” He ordered.

Michael, Isabel, and Kyle turned to head out the door but their way was blocked by the arrival of two men. They didn’t see them of course but impeded their progress until they finally moved into the room enough that they could slip through the door. But just before they did, Ed slipped out of the shied and positioned himself so he looked to be just entering the room. The other men paid no notice of him as he shut them inside the room and relocked the door.

Ed watched as his four charges made their escape down the corridor before he entered the observation room he knew was next to the white room that held Liz. When he entered, he saw his target, “Hello Danielle.”

The woman who had been the most recent to hunt them turned towards him at the same time that he shifted his form once again. Once the light faded he saw the look of pure hatred in her eyes. “You.”

“Yes, it’s me.” The shapeshifter stated.

Pierce’s reaction time was fast but his was faster. He jolted forward when she reached for her firearm and blocked her from doing so. As he pinned her to the wall he asked, “You look a lot like your grandfather Danielle. Are you going to beg for your life like he did or go quietly?”

Danielle felt her disgust for the shapeshifter who she had been hunting for over half her life double in intensity. Here he was in front of her. And it was then that she had a feeling that she was going to end up dying like her grandfather, with a silver handprint on her chest. But she wasn’t going to go out without a fight. He might know quite a bit about her, she was sure that she still had a few tricks up her sleeve to get the better of him. It would be a big sacrifice but in the end knowing that she beat him would make up for loosing her own life and lives of the men in the building.

Ed moved to place his hand on her chest, readying his energy to kill her. “I don’t want you to think this is something to do with your grandfather, I just can’t let you continue to chase after me and my four charges. They are too important.”

Danielle knew that her time was running out so she wiggled around until she could reach the remote in her pocket. She somehow managed it through the increasing amount of pain she felt in her chest. “If I’m going to die, so are you.”

She pushed the button on the remote and the sound of a large explosion was the last thing Danielle Pierce heard as she died.

The shapeshifter knew what was happening. Pierce had set up a self-destruct remote to blow the whole building and everyone in it. She had activated it in the hopes to take him out as well. He knew the base was in lock down mode and burning quickly as he began to make his escape.

PART 43

Kyle, Isabel, and Michael who was still carrying Liz had just gotten out of the building when the unmistakable sounds of explosions could be heard and alarms going off. They didn’t know exactly what was going on, but they did know they needed to hurry even more. Thankfully they reached the place where the humans were waiting for them without meeting any agents. They saw the humans waiting for them and hurried to get into the cars.

Max felt like someone drove a knife in his heart when he got his first look at Liz. She looked even tinier than normal in Michael’s arms as they drew near and she looked so colorless and pasty. He started the jeep’s engine as Michael rushed towards him. With Isabel’s help, Michael managed to get Liz into the vehicle, sitting her in the passenger seat, before hopping in the back himself. “Go! Go!”

Max hit the gas pedal so hard that he was sure he left half the tires behind. He saw in the review mirror that Alex had taken off as well but pulled off in another direction in case they were followed. They had already worked out the details with the Sheriff as well as a meeting place that they could hide in until they would know if it was safe to go home. They had a few bags of supplies that would help them while they hid.

Once they were a few miles away and he was confident that they weren’t being followed, Max took his eyes off of the road to look over at Liz. Her hair looked stringy and unkempt, her skin was pale, and she had dark circles under her eyes. He saw several puncture wounds in her arm and a couple of reddish patches of skin.

Isabel handed her some clothes to put on and with great effort she was pulling the shirt over her head. He saw her hands were shaking as he took hold of one of them. She looked over at him and gave him a weak smile. Isabel who reached forward around the seat to hug her sister interrupted their moment.

Liz could see that Isabel was overcome with emotion as she saw tears in her eyes. “I’m okay Izzy, I’m okay. And it’s thanks to you guys.”

“I’m sorry we couldn’t get you out faster.” Isabel sobbed.

“You got me out, that’s all the matters.” Liz reassured her. She looked at Isabel and Michael before saying, “Thank you. For coming after me.”

“Hey, there was never any question of leaving you in there. We’ve always stuck by each other,” Michael stated. “I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you enough to keep them from getting you.”

“Michael, it wasn’t your fault. They were determined to get me and nothing or no one was going to stop them.” Liz explained. She looked out the front window and asked, “Where are we going?”

“To some place safe that Valenti told us about.” Max clarified.

“Valenti?” Liz asked surprised. “He’s helping us?”

“Yeah, things got kind of complicated.” Michael said appearing uneasy about the subject. “Don’t worry about it now, we’ll talk about it later.”

Liz nodded and the rest of the drive was made in silence. It wasn’t long before they pulled up at the old soap factory outside of Roswell. The building was large enough that Max could pull the jeep right in and they wouldn’t be seen from the outside. They were the first to arrive and sat back to wait for the others. Liz sat down with Max beside her while Isabel paced in front of them and Michael stood watched.

It wasn’t long before the others pulled up. Alex and Maria jumped out and instantly hugged Michael and Isabel. The Sheriff approached them and looked at Liz, “It’s good to see you safe Liz.”

“Thanks.” Liz said uncomfortably. It was strange knowing that he was on their side after so many months, years of hiding their existence from him.

“You kids should be safe here. I’m going to head back into town to see if there’s any word on what the FBI is up to.” The Sheriff informed them before looking back at Liz. “I’m sorry about my part that led them to get to you. If there is anything I can do, just let me know.”

“Thank you, Sheriff.” Liz said smiling at him. She could tell he was speaking sincerely. “It’s nice to know we have even more friends.”

The Sheriff nodded to her before climbing back into his SUV and left. When he was gone, Liz said, “Okay someone has got to tell me how he got involved.”

Isabel was the one to fill her in on how the Sheriff had come to find out the truth. She started with Max finding them in school and the three of them breaking into the Valenti house, Michael’s display of his powers and being caught. She continued to tell her about Michael hunting for Kyle not to mention how they got inside the base and how they got her out. “I’m glad you guys found out that we could trust him.”

“After what happened, we didn’t have much choice.” Isabel stated.

“We ended up getting her out without his help. We didn’t need him, or any of the humans.” Kyle remarked interrupting. “We only need each other.”

“Um, excuse me?” Maria said angrily at the alien who was insulting them. “You’re new here, and you have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I know that it was because of Liz healing Max that brought the FBI after you. And that it was their attachments to humans that made them stay in Roswell although it was dangerous.” Kyle stated.

“The humans have been there for us, risked their lives to care about us Kyle.” Isabel argued. She opened up a bag she had been caring and pulled out all the things they found in the cave. “We wouldn’t have found any of this if Max hadn’t found out that the Sheriff had files about aliens.”

“But they’re making you deny who you really are.” Kyle reasoned. “You see them and think that if you try hard enough that you’ll be like them, that you’ll be human.”

“We were raised human, Kyle.” Liz said jumping in.

“That doesn’t mean that you are.” Kyle said. “If you were then you wouldn’t have been taken Liz.”

“Hey!” Michael jumped in ready to argue but Liz stopped him. “Michael don’t. It doesn’t help if we’ll all arguing. I’m too weak and have no powers to break up a fight. Besides Kyle didn’t say anything that wasn’t true, if I was human I wouldn’t have been taken.”

“But Liz, that doesn’t give them the right to have kidnapped you either.” Max spoke up.

“No, but if she’d stay away from you then maybe she could be with someone that could protect her. Like I’m supposed to.” Kyle growled in annoyance.

Max felt his anger he’d been feeling ever since he saw Liz and Kyle kiss in the park rise again and he decided he wasn’t going to take it anymore. “She’s not your property that you can just come in here and claim.”

“No, she’s not.” Kyle said stepping forward to glare at Max. “But she is supposed to be with me. It’s what was meant for us, it’s our destiny to be with each other and not some pathetic human.”

Max stood up and started to approach Kyle but for once Michael was the voice of reason and stepped in between the two men. “Like Liz said, this isn’t helping anything. So both of you back down.”

Neither of the guys moved, they just stared at each other waiting for the other to make a move. Max was the one to back down when he heard a soft voice, Liz’s voice. “Max.”

Max turned to look at Liz’s pleading face and moved to join her again. As he approached her, Isabel walked up and handed them some things. “Liz needs some rest. We’ll keep a look out down here, why don’t you two find a place for some privacy and get some sleep?”

Max knew Isabel was trying to smooth over the situation and could see Liz was grateful for it. She was in no condition for what was going on. He held out his hand and helped Liz up and the two went in search of someplace private.

Kyle looked like he was about to follow them when Michael placed his hand on Kyle’s chest. “Don’t even think about it. You will leave them alone or you’ll find yourself thrown out of here. You’ll walk on thin ice as it is.”

Kyle looked like he was going to argue but instead turned and walked away. He didn’t go far, just on the other side of the large factory floor but it was far enough away to make them all feel more comfortable. The remaining four settled down to wait out the rest of the night.
