I glanced up my newest room mate, watching as he fidgeted slightly, nervously. I smiled warmly, knowing that the boy was nervous, that he wasn’t sure he completely wanted to be there. "What's going on, Shannon?" "Can I. . ." He paused, hesitated. "Can I talk to you?" I could *see* the tears in his eyes, I knew he was upset about something. I sat up, closing the magazine I was reading. "Sure, Shannon, you know you can always talk to me if you need to.” Shannon stepped hesitantly into my half of the room, and I sat up, leaning against the headboard. I patted the bed next to me, motioning for him to join me. He moved to the bed, sitting down beside me. He was leaning against the headboard, but he was *so* damn tense – I just wanted to wrap my arms around him and soothe all his fears away. Shannon brought out the protectiveness in me. It was odd how he was the only man who pinged the 'protect the women' meter. "Shannon?" I asked softly. "What's wrong?" "I. . .I miss home," he whispered, wringing his hands in his lap. "I miss home, I miss my friends. I miss my family." He sighed, looking up at the ceiling. Tears fell down his cheeks. "I. . .I have a secret. I'm scared though. I mean, I don't know ya'll yet. . .I don't know how you will. . ." He swallowed, closing his eyes. I could tell whatever it was that was bothering Shannon was *really* bothering him. I wrapped my arm around his shoulders, causing him to tense further. I pulled him against my side, his stiff warm body *frozen* in place. I could see his eyes darting around, like a frightened animal. "Shannon," I said softly. "It's ok. You are going to be ok. Whatever it is, your secret – this thing that is so desperately bothering you - you can tell me." "Bwok, I. . ." He swallowed, running his sweaty palms over his p.j. bottoms. "Bwok, you will hate me when I get through telling you this." I laughed softly, knowing that it was a comforting sound, a happy sound of joy. It worked, Shannon relaxed against me a little. "Come on, Shannon, you can tell me," I urged. "N. . .No, I really can't," he whispered, his deep voice sounding so tiny and scared. "You will hate me. I don't want you to hate me, Bwok." "I promise I won't. Look, whatever it is, I'll tell you one of my secrets." He turned to me, hope filling his big green eyes. "Really? And you won't hate me?" I smiled. "Have you ever killed someone, Shannon?" He frowned slightly. "No, of course not!" "Are you sleeping with a sheep, your momma, or your sister?" He made a face of disgust, which was so endearingly cute I wanted to pull him into my arms and crush him in a tight bear hug. "Eww, Bwok, that's ucky." I laughed. "Then nothing you can tell me will make you hate me." He took a deep breath, one that gives a man courage when he's about to tell his biggest secret. He turned his head away, so he didn't have to watch my face. "Bwok, I'm. . .I. . ." He paused, his hands coming to his face, pressing knuckles into his wet eyes. I pulled his fists away, turning his face to mine. I smiled gently. "We are friends now," I said quietly. "Whatever it is you need to tell me, I will still be here." His big blue eyes never left mine when those three words left his lips softly: "Bwok, I'm gay." I cocked an eyebrow. "Ok." I shrugged. He frowned slightly, his forehead coming together in confusion. "That's it?" I shrugged again. "Well, yea. How did you expect me to react?" I tilted my head curiously. "I thought you'd be angry, disgusted, hurt, mad, anything. . .not. . .this." "Do you need me to *get* angry?" I asked curiously, wondering why he almost seemed disappointed. His eyes widened in mild shock and he shook his head furiously. "No, god, pwease, don't. I just. . .I mean. . .I didn't expect. . ." He trailed off, biting his bottom lip. "So you don't hate me." It wasn't a question. "Of course not, Shannon." I glanced up at the ceiling. "Hmm. . .now I owe you a secret. Hmm. . .I have a lot of them, but I will tell you one that might make you feel better." He smiled, relaxing more into my arms. "I think I'd like that." "I've been with a man before," I said softly. His eyes widened comically. "Really?" he asked, his voice soft and filled with awe. "What. . .what's it like? Are you gay? I thought you liked women!" "I do. . .I'm bi, Shannon. What's it like? It's different than being with a woman. . .hell, even kissing a man is different than kissing a woman." I chuckled slightly. "But you know that, I'm sure. . ." He looked down, his cheeks flaring into the most beautiful shade of pink I'd ever seen. My eyes widened. "You haven't kissed a man? Or a woman? Or either?" I could almost believe that about Shannon – he was sweet and innocent enough to have never done anything. "I've kissed girls before," he said softly. "I used to have a girlfriend. But. . .I've never kissed a boy. . .I just know I really like them." He sighed. I chewed my bottom lip, watching his. I had wanted to kiss him the second I met him, and suddenly, knowing that he'd never kissed a man before made that ache *that* much greater. "Would you like to find out what it's like?" I whispered softly. "You mean. . ." He looked up at me, his eyes shining with joy. "You kissing me?" My fingers trailed along his shoulder, finally resting on the back of his neck. It wasn't a threatening touch – I didn't want to force Shannon to do something he didn't want to do, but I wanted him to know that if he were interested, I wouldn't mind being the first. "Yea," I said with a smile. And then he was kissing me. His lips were tentative against mine, trembling and nervous. It was as if he was pouring all of his fear into that moment, our lips touching. I brought my hand up to his cheek, knowing that I had to relax him, or his first kiss with a guy – with *me* - would be disappointing. I ran my fingers along the smooth baby's skin of his cheek, my other hand still resting on his neck. I opened my mouth slightly, my tongue snaking out to lick his lips in small strokes. He gasped slightly, his mouth opening. I took the moment of surprise and slid my tongue in, praying that I didn't scare him half to death. He froze for half a second before he relaxed, opening his mouth to mine. His tongue tentatively reached out, touching mine. And then I was in heaven. Shannon was an *incredible* kisser – slow and sensual, he had the perfect amount of submission, enough to drive me absolutely crazy with desire. As we kissed, he became more and more relaxed, his body pressed against mine, his fingers trailing over my bare chest. I could feel them leaving blazing trails of desire along my skin, and I had to hold myself back, knowing that if I pulled away and stripped him down he'd probably have a problem with it. He finally pulled away, gulping large breaths of air. "Bwok," he whispered, his eyes dark and stormy with desire. I'd never seen a color so beautiful as the blue of his eyes at that moment. "Wow," I said, blinking slightly, my head still up above the clouds. "Wow." He giggled slightly, leaning forward to steal another quick kiss from my lips. It was as if everything Shannon had bottled up – all his fear and doubts, the terror that he was making a mistake – had been ebbed away with that one kiss. He pressed against me, hugging me tightly. "Bwok?" he whispered, his cheek against my chest. I wrapped my arms around him tightly, never wanting to let go of the warmth in my embrace. "Yea, Shannon?" My voice was thick with emotion, and my body was alive with desire. . .I just wanted to push him down and please him over and over. . . "Bwok, can I stay in your bed and watch a movie with you?" I smiled into his long silky hair, kissing the top of his head. "I'd like that, Shannon." I could feel his grin against my chest. "Cool." "Cool," I echoed him. THE END
