Dear Family and Friends,

 

            I am excited to share with you another opportunity the Lord has granted for me to go on a short-term mission trip in April this year!  I will be spending approximately one week in each of the following cities:  Almaty in Kazakhstan, Kabul in Afghanistan, and Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan.  I will be traveling with a group of doctors and other health care professionals from my residency program to not only work in a clinic and hospital settings, but also to host a medical conference at medical schools in these cities!  My medical residency program has been hosting these conference for many years, using them as a gateway to develop relationships and share the good news of the grace and love of Jesus Christ.  In fact, through such endeavors, graduating residents from our program have become long-term missionaries that have started medical residency programs in places like Macau, China and Almaty, Kazakhstan (Kabul, Afghanistan’s residency is now in development). 

            In Kazakhstan, we are able to have optional talks at the conference that focus on moral issues, and we directly share what the Bible has to say about such things, in addition to directly sharing the Gospel.  This typically leads to lengthy fruitful discussions, as you can imagine!  In Afghanistan, we will not be able to be so forthright during the conference, but hopefully the Lord will open the doors for us to discuss spiritual issues in-between lectures. 

            I am excited to tell you that even before I sent out this support letter, the Lord has provided for nearly 60% of my expected expenses ($2500 out of $4000), and I stand in awe of His faithfulness!  This came through the gracious contributions of individuals, Christian Medical and Dental Association, and In His Image!  However, I am in need of the remaining 40%, so please be in prayer as to whether to help send me financially.     

            Furthermore, I am in need of many more people who would be willing to commit to pray for me regularly on a prayer support team!  As you probably know, there is quite a bit of turmoil and darkness in Afghanistan, and I am in great need of your prayer for protection as well as prayer for the Lord to bring a harvest where we go to plant and water.  Perhaps, as some have tried to dissuade me from going, I am somewhat naïve about these dangers, but I am not naïve of the Lord’s call on me to go there this April, and the Holy Spirit recalls to my mind verses such as:

 

Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.  -Matthew 10:27-33
