- On the 23 rd of December Egypt celebrates every year the Victory Day
which is considered the National Day of Port Said Governorate. On that
day the Egyptian people and army repelled the British, French and
Israeli aggression.
- This aggression came in reply to Egypt's nationalization of the Suez
Canal on July 26 th, 1956 the move aimed to make use of the Canal's
revenues in building the High Dam.
- This aggression was a failure due to the cooperation insured between
the people and the army and due to the good handling of the crisis on
the side of the political leadership, especially the position of the
United Nations which condemned the aggression and the declaration of the
U.S.A and the Soviet Union denouncing the use of force to settle the
dispute between Egypt on the one side and Britain and France on the
other. Due to pressures of the world public opinion, Britain and France
were urged to withdraw on Dec. 23rd, 1956. The Israeli troops left Sinai
and Gaza by the beginning of 1956.
- Egypt succeeded in building the High Dam which was officially opened
in Jan. 15th, 1971. The Dam has protected Egypt from drought and high
floods. As a result of this giant project comes the New Delta project
which starts south of the High Dam and runs through to the Farafara
Oasis in the Western Desert which will be launched at the beginning of
January 1997 to create a new valley parallel to the old Nile
valley.
- Afterwards, Port Said has become a free zone. Today, the city is
about to start the implementation of some gigantic projects in the
fields of tourism and industry including the large free zone in the east
sub-canal which will be a main source of hard
currency.
