The Great Games | die Magier von Pangea | DIE MAGIER VON PANGEA by Ralf Burkert art Elena Obermuller publish Queen Players: 2-4 Duration: 60 mins. Pace: Medium; some thinking, can have analysis paralysis. Downtime needed to figure out what to do next. Complexity: Heavy. Straightforward game so that a 10-year old could play, but much strategic depth. Luck: Basically none. Only in drawing new minions -- may not get useful type, but luck not too big a factor. Tension: High. So much to do, so much hoping other players won't hurt you too bad. Many groans. Laughter/Trashtalk: Lots. You need to be thinking, but when the 'earth' starts continental sprinting, it makes for threats and groans (and laughter!) Visuals: Excellent! Who is this artist? More! MORE! Thick tiles, gorgeous board and minions. Theme: High. Great art and awesome concept (shifting land tiles) makes good atmosphere for what is quite a tactical game. Gamer Appeal: Yes; quite good. Non-G Appeal: Unknown so far. 2 players: Very strategic 2 players. I like it. Replay: Very Good. Randomized tile layout, highly tactical, three different victory conditions, makes for a challenge each game Played 5+ times. Good with 2-4 players. Best with 2-4 players. |

Quick summary | (The game title translates to 'The Magicians of Pangea') One of my all time favorites. From your castle, produce minions which you then send out to work the land (producing goods needed to buy amulets), or to go buy amulets (which cost goods). Get the amulet, race back to the castle to drop it off, and now you have more action points. The problem? These dang land masses keep shifting like crazy. How on earth will you get you minion home? Loads of fun and strategy in this one. In the early part of the game you get one action per turn; later on, as you acquire amulets, you will have more actions. When it's your turn, you can choose from several options, including: produce a new minion, move a non-player minion, shift a land tile, etc. This game has so many opportunities to mess with other players. Shift a land tile away from them, or pile minions onto a land tile so they can't produce. This game has much strategy, but is quite quick (60 mins.) and could be played even by younger players (10+.) Beautiful graphics make this an ultra winner. (Some German text on player mats and board. Most (online) stores include English instructions; English player aids are available at www.boardgamegeek.com) |
