TITHING

IS IT FOR TODAY?

When did tithing start?   It was paid by Abraham to Melchizedek.

Genesis 14:18-20

18:

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine:  and he was the priest of the most high Yahweh.

19:

And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high Yahweh, possessor of heaven and earth:

20:

And blessed be the most high Yahweh, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.  And he gave him tithes of all.

Jacob vows a tenth of all his property to Yahweh.

Genesis 28:20-22

20:

And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If Yahweh will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

21:

So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall Yahweh be my Mighty One.

22:

And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be Yahweh's house:  and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Yahweh made tithing a law and commandment for the children of Israel.  Which you can see by the following chapters and verses.

Leviticus 26:46

46:

These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which Yahweh made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.

Lev. 27:1, 30-34

1:

And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying,

30:

And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is Yahweh's:  it is holy unto Yahweh.

31:

And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.

32:

And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be set apart unto Yahweh.

33:

He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it:  and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be set apart; it shall not be redeemed.

34:

These are the commandments, which Yahweh commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.

Tithes given to Levites.

Num. 18:21-26

21:

And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

22:

Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear transgression, and die.

23:

But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity:  it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.

24:

But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as a heave offering unto Yahweh, I have given to the Levites to inherit:  therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.

25:

And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying,

26:

Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for Yahweh, even a tenth part of the tithe.

Deut. 12:5-6

5:

But unto the place which Yahweh your Mighty One shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come.

6:

And thither ye shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, and your tithes, and heave offerings of your hand, and your vows, and your freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and of your flocks.

Deut. 14:22-29

22:

Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.

23:

And thou shalt eat before Yahweh thy Mighty One, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear Yahweh thy Mighty One always.

24:

And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which Yahweh thy Mighty One shall choose to set his name there, when Yahweh thy Mighty One hath blessed thee:

25:

Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which Yahweh thy Mighty One shall choose:

26:

And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth:  and thou shalt eat there before Yahweh thy Mighty One, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,

27:

And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee.

28:

At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates:

29:

And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that Yahweh thy Mighty One may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.

Deut. 26:12-14

12:

When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithes of thine increase the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be filled;

13:

Then thou shalt say before Yahweh thy Mighty One, I have brought away the hallowed things out of mine house, and also have given them unto the Levite, and unto the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all thy commandments which thou hast commanded me:  I have not transgressed thy commandments, neither have I forgotten them:

14:

I have not eaten thereof in my mourning, neither have I taken away ought thereof for any unclean use, nor given ought thereof for the dead:  but I have hearkened to the voice of Yahweh my Mighty One, and have done according to all that thou hast commanded me.

Neh. 10:34-39

34:

And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of Yahweh, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the table of Yahweh our Mighty One, as it is written in the law:

35:

And to bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of Yahweh:

36:

Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks to bring to the house of Yahweh, unto the priests that minister in the house of Yahweh.

37:

And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of Yahweh; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.

38:

And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes:  and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of Yahweh, to the chambers, into the treasure house.

39:

For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers:  and we will not forsake the house of Yahweh.

Notice here in the next verses Yahweh is speaking to the children of Israel.

Malachi 3:6-7

6:

For I am Yahweh, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

7:

Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them.  Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith Yahweh of hosts.  But ye said, Wherein shall we return?

You will find many preachers quoting the following scriptures to make you think tithing is for today.  These are the most favorite scriptures they use from the Old Covenant.

Malachi 3:8-10

8:

Will a man rob Yahweh?  Yet ye have robbed me.  But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee?  In tithes and offerings.

9:

Ye are cursed with a curse:  for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

10:

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith Yahweh of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

You see, if you miss just one tithe then you are a thief and a robber.  The Messiah came to give you a better way.

Let us now go to the New Covenant.

Matt. 23:23

23:

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith:  these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Luke 11:42

42:

But woe unto you, Pharisees!  For ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of Yahweh:  these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Luke 18:9-14

9:

And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

10:

Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

11:

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, Yahweh, I thank thee, that i am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

12:

I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

13:

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, Yahweh be merciful to me a transgressor.

14:

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other:  for everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

In this chapter of Hebrews it speaks of the law of tithes.   The Messiah our high priest came and abolished the old law and tithing was included.

Hebrews 7:1-28

1:

For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high Yahweh, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

2:

To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is King of peace;

3:

Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of Yahweh; abideth a priest continually.

4:

Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.

5:

And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according tot he law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:

6:

But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.

7:

And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.

8:

And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

9:

And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, paid tithes in Abraham.

10:

For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

11:

If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

12:

For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

13:

For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance of the table.

14:

For it is evident that Yahweh sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

15:

And it is yet far more evident:  for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

16:

Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

17:

For he testifieth, Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchisedec.

18:

For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

19:

For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto Yahweh.

20:

And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest:

21:

(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, Yahweh swear and will not repent, thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchisedec:0

22:

By so much was Immaneul made a surety of a better testament.

23:

And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:

24:

But this man, because he continueth ever, hath and unchangeable priesthood.

25:

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto Yahweh by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

26:

For such an high priest became us, who is righteous, harmless, undefiled, separate from transgressors, and made higher than the heavens;

27:

Who needeth not daily,a s those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own transgressions, and then for the people's:  for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

28:

For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated forevermore.

Another scripture that preachers use for tithing, has nothing to do with tithing.  I'll prove how it fits in with it's own context of scriptures.

This is the scripture they use:

1 Cor. 16:1-2

1:

Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the assemblies of Galatia, even so do ye.

2:

Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as Yahweh hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

Let's see what Paul is actually talking about here and also putting the above scripture in the context where it rightfully belongs.

Acts 11:27-30

27:

And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.

28:

And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world:  which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

29:

Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

30:

Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

1 Cor. 16:1-5

1:

Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the assemblies of Galatia, even so do ye.

2:

Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as Yahweh hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

3:

And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem.

4:

And if it be meet that I go also, they shall go with me.

5:

Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through Macedonia:  for I do pass through Macedonia.

2 Cor. 8:1-24

1:

Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of Yahweh bestowed on the assemblies of Macedonia;

2:

How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of the liberality.

3:

For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;

4:

Praying us with much entreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

5:

And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to Yahweh, and unto us by the will of Yahweh.

6:

Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun so he would also finish in you the same grace also.

7:

Therefore, as ye abound in everything, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

8:

I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.

9:

For ye know the grace of our Master, Yahweh the Messiah, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

10:

And herein I give my advice:  for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.

11:

Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.

12:

For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according tot hat he hath not.

13:

For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened:

14:

But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want:  that there may be equality:

15:

As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.

16:

But thanks be to Yahweh, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.

17:

For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you.

18:

And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the word throughout all the assemblies;

19:

And not that only, but who was also chosen of the assemblies to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the esteem of Yahweh, and declaration of your ready mind:

20:

Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us:

21:

Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of Yahweh, but also in the sight of men.

22:

And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.

23:

Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the esteem of the Messiah.

24:

Wherefore show ye to them, and before the assemblies, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf.

You should be able to see by now that scriptures prove tithing was for the children of Israel.  It is not for the New Covenant.  The Messiah abolished the Mosaic Laws and gave people a  better way.  Which will be proven also by scripture.

If tithing was really for today like preachers say, why aren't people giving a tenth of ALL their firstfruits like the law of tithing says?  By the law only, the Levites were allowed to accept tithes from the people.  That being the law, then the pastors who teach tithing must be Levites because they accept tithes from the people.  Why don't they all have farms to store all the firstfruits?  They tell you today, it is all money.

Let us go back to the scriptures and find what the Messiah wants instead of tithing from his people.

1 John 3:17-18

17:

But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of Yahweh in him?

18:

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

Matt. 6:1-4

1:

Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them:  otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2:

Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have praise of men.  Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3:

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4:

That thin alms may be in secret:  and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

Romans 12:8

8:

Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation:  he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity, he that ruleth, with diligence; he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness.

2 Cor. 9:6-15

6:

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

7:

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity:  for Yahweh loveth a cheerful giver.

8:

And Yahweh is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

9:

(As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor:  His righteousness remaineth forever.

10:

Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)

11:

Being enriched in everything to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to Yaweh.

12:

For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saint, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto Yahweh;

13:

Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they praise Yahweh for your professed subjection unto the word of the Messiah, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;

14:

And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of Yahweh in you.

15:

Thanks be unto Yahweh for his unspeakable gift.

Matt. 25:34-40

34:

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35:

For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat:  I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink:  I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36:

Naked, and ye clothed me:  I was sick, and ye visited me:  I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37:

Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Master, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee?  Or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38:

When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in?  Or naked, and clothed thee?

39:

Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison and came unto thee?

40:

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Matt. 19:21

21:

Immanuel said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven:  and come and follow me.

Luke 3:10-11

10:

And the people asked him, saying, what shall we do then?

11:

He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

Luke 6:38

38:

Give, and it shall be given unto you, good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men given into your bosom.  For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Luke 11:41

41:

But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

Luke 12:33-34

33:

Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

34:

For where your treasure is there will your heart be also.

Acts 20:35

35:

I have showed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Master Yahweh, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

1 Cor. 13:3

3:

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Ephesians 4:28

28:

Let him that stole steal no more:  but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

1 Timothy 5:16

16:

If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the assemblies be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

Romans 15:26-27

26:

For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.

27:

It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are.  For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.

Matt. 5:42

42:

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Galations 2:10

10:

Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

Notice in the following four verses that the people were not paying tithes, but giving from their abundance.

Mark 12:41-44

41:

And Immanuel sat  over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury:  and many that were rich cast in much.

42:

And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

43:

And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

44:

For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

Mark 14:7

7:

For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good:  but me ye have not always.

Luke 6:30-35

30:

Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

31:

And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

32:

For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye?  For transgressors also love those that love them.

33:

And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye?  For transgressors also do even the same.

34:

And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye?  For transgressors also lend to transgressors, to receive as much again.

Luke 14:12-14

12:

Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbors; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.

13:

But when thou makest a feast call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

14:

And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee; for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

1 Tim. 6:17-19

17:

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living Mighty One, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

18:

That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

19:

Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

James 2:13-18

13:

For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath showed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

14:

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works?  Can faith save him?

15:

If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

16:

And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; not withstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

17:

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18:

Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works:  show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.

CONCLUSION:  Tithing is not for today.  You are to give from your abundance.  Say you made a thousand dollars a month and it took five hundred to live on for that month.  That would give you five hundred extra, how much of this five hundred dollars are you going to give to YAHWEH to further his truth, and to help the poor or other areas Yahweh may lead you to use it?  It is not only money, but giving of yourself.  Most important, let Yahweh lead you in all your giving.

Most of all, if it comes not from the heart, he does not want it.

I would like to add this bit of information also:  Did you know the U.S. government gave religious organizations tax exemption because they were to take care of the poor in this country.  But you see who ended up doing it, the government.
