When you come to Alabama, there are a few key phrases that you'll need to know before you cross the state line. This is not comprehensive, but it is enough to get you by. |
Y'all: This is what we use to refer to a group of people. We don't say "you guys" or "youse guys". If you're really feeling southern, you can throw out an "all y'all" to impress those around you. |
Fixin': If you are getting ready to do something, then you are fixin' to do it. As in, you are fixin' to register for Y'all! |
Might Could: You would say "might could" instead of "might be able to". It's not the same as could; it is much less decisive! |
Coke: All carbonated drinks in the south are Coke. We go out for Cokes and we buy our drinks in Coke machines. If you say "pop", people probably won't know what you're talking about! |
Sweet Tea: It's the southern house wine. If you haven't tried it, just stop buy any restaurant south of Kentucky. They're bound to have it! |
